Use the time that you are waiting for troops to be created to hunt animals as this can boost your gold and food numbers.

Having a temple will provide blessings that will increase your defence, attack, and loot raided.

A good strategy is to build the War Accademy as this will allows you to use tactics like First Aid which will enable you to heal troops and Sabotage which can disable buildings.

You will be limited in what troops you can take into battle when you first start attacking opposing nations but as you progress your options will increse. For example, you will be able to enlist the help of speciality troops that barracks cannot produce from Mercenary camps and joining an alliance can provide you with donated armies.

Make sure that when you select a wonder that boosts your resources you use it correctly so you benefit from it. For example if you use the Hanging Garden which boosts collection from fruit trees and gold mines by 20% and cuts wait time for collection by half you need to make sure that you have placed them close enough to the wonder.

Build as many roads as you can and connect them to buildings as this will earn you Gold.

Focus on maxing out the upgrades on your farms, mills, merchants and markets before spending on anything else.
