Introduction

Guitar Hero 2 is just a flat out awesome game. The songs are great, the gameplay is awesome, and it offers a great challenge, even for beginers on easy mode! I reccomend this game to... Anyone really. Unless you just plain don't like music, this game is for you. The guitar controller is a must, because without it you just can't really get the feel for the game. There are TONS of songs to play, so you probably won't get bored any time soon. The game (with the controller) costs a hefty $90 (Canadian money) but it's well worth it. You won't be putting this game down for a LONG time readers, so you had best free some time on your schedule! I hope throughout reading my review you'll learn exactly WHY this is a great game that shouldn't be passed by. Ask anyone who's played the game, and they'll tell you it's awesome. Even if you suck at it (which most of my friends do) you'll find it a fun game that you just want to keep practising at to get better at and eventually play it on expert mode. The four modes (easy, medium, hard, and expert) vary greatly, and can force some challenges no matter what skill level you are. On easy, there are only three buttons used (excluding the strum and wammy bars) and those buttons are the green, red, and yellow. For beginers, this may sound like a small thing, but it's not exactly "easy" and the mode name suggests. For advanced players, you always want to press buttons that aren't there, so it gets to be confusing. On medium, you use green, red, yellow, AND blue. This is a real challenge because now you're up to using 4 fingers to play. Now, on hard, you use all 5 buttons. That's a real challenge, that I for one can't do yet. On expert, you again use all 5 buttons, but it goes EXTEREMLY fast and there are a lot more notes to play. All I can say is that when you reach that level, good luck.

Graphics

The graphics in this game offer medium quality, but then again, it's not really designed for it's graphics, it's designed for playing songs. There are no great graphics moments, the graphics stay the same throughout the whole game. The best quality in graphics is probably the note bar, which is the huge bar at the bottom of the screen showing you what note(s) to hit. However, there is a large variety of characters, guitars, and other things to unlock, so you really forget about the poor graphics quality. The peoples heads look kind of big sometimes, especially the main guy's chin. That thing is HUGE. But I think the character with the greatest graphical quality is the Grim Ripper. He's got awesome details, and his star power move is awesome. He floats into the air and his guitar begins to swirl aroudn him while he sucks up people in the audience's souls. This is an awesome effect which can only be reached by getting a X8 on start power, which is no mean feat. Meaning it's not easy to do. Aside from the Grim Ripper, the games graphics aren't what anyone would call "in depth", but they're well suited to a game that's about using a guitar to play. All in all, the games graphics are a little shetchy, but are good enough to pass my standards. They're not so bad you that hate the game for it, but at the same time it's not the only reason you play the game. They suffice, but are not exelling in any manner. However, they lack a certain... Something that really draws you into the game like Final Fantasy XII does. But, the graphics are fine the way they are, and really don't need to be changed, no matter what any critic says.

Sound

The sound in this game is just simply amazing. No matter what song you play, you hear great sound, whether it's the music, or the people singing, the sound is great. It's definately the games way of making up for it's poor graphic quality. The greatness of this game really comes from the sound, and how it really gets you into the game to a point where you're not just playing the music, you ARE the music. Like, you can not fail the song because you are the song, you fail the song you fail your life. Nothing can go wrong because you're so in sync with the music that you just forget about all outerly distractions, nothing matter but the sheer victory of the song and the grand satisfaction when you get 5 stars on a song. Everything around you feels like a liability, like nothing's real but the music that you're playing, and the crowd cheers, and the point counter goes higher and higher. The sound is just so amazing that you'd have no idea you were playing a video game, you would think that you were playing a CD on a brand new CD player, or even on a PS3 with high def surround sound. The sound is definately the peak point of the game, and should not be taken for granted. They really worked their tail bones when they made this game, and it undoubtedly broke the mould. There is simply no game that isn't and RPG that can stand up to this one in sound. Every once and a while you come around a sports game where you'll hear adequate sound and think to yourself "wow that's really something" But then there's this. This simplu tops it. Once you hear this, you'll forget all about any other amazing sound you;ve heard in any other game. I guarentee that this is the best sounding game you'll hear until it comes out for XBox 360, but as it stands, it'll still be the greatest sounding game. Nothing can top it.

Gameplay

The gameplay is flat out awesome. Let me spell it for you. A-W-E-S-O-M-E. The way you handle the guitar is just so amazing you feel like you're actually playing the guitar thanks to the amazing sound which I explained in my last spoof. If you are using the regular PS2 controller it really just ruins the whole experience. You pretty much need the guitar controller to actually have a good gaming experience with it. Otherwise you're just screwed. If you are going to get this game, for Heavens' sake spend the extra fifty bucks to get the guitar controller. It's fifty dollars, you'll earn it back evntually. The game is just about ruined without the guitar controller, so GET IT. Gameplay is awesome with the controller, peice of crap without. I'm not just trying to get you to spend an extra fifty bucks, you NEED it to actually enjoy the game. The game wouldn't really be guitar hero 2 if you didn't use the guitar right? If you use the PS2 controller, it might as well be called Controller Hero. Sure, the game might me a bit easier with the normal controller, but it takes away the fun you get when you use the guitar controller. So honsetly, do not get guitar hero 2 without the guitar. It simply wrecks the whole game, and you might as well just not play it. Gameplay is NOTHING without the guitar. That's the whole point of the game, using the guitar. So do yourself, and everyone who plays it with you a favor, and GET THE GUITAR CONTROLLER! You won't regret spending those xtra fifty dollars, and no one else will blame you for watsing money, because you're not. Don't pass the opportunity to have great game play, get the guitar controller. The game lasts incredibly long, even after you complete the songs you can still play to get 5 starts on each of them. And with so much to unlock, you'll be playing forever. Gameplay is awesome. But remember, it's only awesome if you have the guitar controller.

Lastability

The game can last well over 100 hours depending how good you start out. If you start out crappy, even on easy mode, the game is gunna last a very long time. If you start out good, it may take a little less time to complete. If you start getting 3 stars on every song, then working your way up, you should look at a long play time. If you start out nailing five star performances right away, you migth be looking at about 50 hours of story related gameplay. But that's the great thing. There's also quick play, so you can practise you're playing ability while still getting a rating and being able to fail. Practise mode isn't all that good for practising because you can't fail. If you don't fail, you don't learn. So basically, this is one of those games that can just last forever. With all the characters, songs, and guitars you can get, you'll be trying forever to get them all unless you're cheap and use a gameshark. So really, just try to have fun, and try to get three stars at the begining so that you can have a longer lasting game. Work your way up from there, and you'll have a great time playing this game. A great, long, time. So remember, how long the game lasts revolves entirely around you. Don't think you have to rush to beat the game as fast as you can, because that will just make it all the shorter.

Overall

As I said in the intro, Guitar Hero 2 is just a flat out awesome game. The game is just one of the best I've ever played, and I hope you think so too. This game should NOT be passed by. I'm telling you now, that if you try it, you will LOVE it. You'll want to rush to the nearest game store and buy it as soon as you can. I can guarentee you that there are a minimum few games that surpass this one, and they probably don't exell by much. The game is just all around great, whether it be the graphics, the sound, the gameplay (which you SHOULD have the guitar controller for) or the amazingly long lastability. Every last aspect of the game makes it one of the best I, or anyone has ever played. I hope you feel the same way after you read this extremely long review, but it takes a lot to convince someone to like a game. Do not think you've wasted your time reading all this, it's all true. Everything I have said about this game in the past few paragraphs are entirely true, and I salute the creators of this awesome game. They deserve every last credit for creating such an awesome game, and I'm looking forward to playing an even better version on XBox 360. Of course, I can't imagine too much would be imrpoved aside from the graphics, but overall, it'll be a great game worth anyones money. I have actually considered buying an XBox 360 just for that game, but them I thought to myself that if a Guitar Hero 3 comes out for the PS3, then I'd just have wasted my money on an XBox 360 and Guitar Hero 2. So all in all, this is an awesome game that shouldn't be passed by. Next time you've got moeny in your wallet, BUY IT! You won't be dissappointent, I guarantee it.
