I recently purchased Guild Wars to play while I am on holiday, seeing as it's a free alternative to the rather costly World of Warcraft. On first looks it doesn't look too bad, you can create up to 4 characters, with a variety of possible professions; Warrior, Elementalist, Monk, Ranger, Necromancer and Mesmer. I chose to go with an Elementalist, as I enjoy playing a mage type character. Later in the game you are allowed to choose a second profession to compliment the first choice. I chose Monk, figuring being able to heal myself would come in handy.
The graphics are semi-realistic, though playing on a laptop doesn't do the graphics any favors. I ran the game on an ATI Radeon 200M (256mb). The game's graphics are quite smooth and there are few if any graphical glitches. The spell detail is on par with anything similar games have, if better. The graphics do lack slightly in battle sequences, though this is easily looked past.
The version of the game I purchased actually shipped with the soundtrack, which was a nice thought. The background music is quite pleasant, however spell/weapon sounds aren't as good as I thought they could have been, but the battles are fast paced enough that you can ignore these factors.
Definitely the best aspect of this game, the gameplay is quite enjoyable. Being an MMO, there is never a lack of other people to play with. But even if you don't have any friends on, you can get up to 4 henchmen to join you on your quests. Speaking of quests, there is never an end to the well designed quests in this game. Definitely a game for everyone.
All MMO's (Massive Multiplayer Online) games have a longer lastability than other games do to the fact you can always do something with a friend and the games are always being updated. Guild Wars is a huge game and in the six or seven hours I played it, I only saw five or six areas of the game, a small portion of the world. I could play this game for hours, it is quite interesting.
Overall I have to give this game a 9, it is extremely playable and a cheap alternative to other MMO's. A game for all ages, and with already over one million players, there is always someone else to share your Guild Wars experience. Definitely worth buying next time you see it, though you'll want a decent internet connection (Broadband at least).
Thank you for taking the time to read my review.
