Introduction
When you first gain control over the main character, you find yourself surrounded by enemy legionnaires. This is a good opportunity to familiarize yourself with the basic controls. The basic combat controls are: Square to perform a normal Attack, Triangle for a heavy Attack, and Circle to grab enemies. Hold the L1 button to block incoming enemy attacks. Against Kratos in his present state, the enemy legionnaires don't stand a chance. You can simply approach an enemy and press Circle for a quick kill.

Once the enemy legionnaires stop entering the room, approach the gate straight ahead and take hold of the handle by pressing R1. Rapidly tap the Circle button to lift up the gate. Make your way to the end of this hall, fighting the legionnaires along the way. At the end of the hall, turn left and hop through the hole in the wall. Once opened, the Green Orb chest here will restore your health. Climb up the ladder and follow the walkway. You will find yourself outside, standing on a balcony.

BOSS BATTLE: Colossus of Rhodes 1
The enemy legionnaires here respawn continuously so don't bother attacking them. To stun the Colossus, you will need to use 'Poseidon's Rage' which is currently the only magic spell in your arsenal. To use magic, press the L2 button. For the magic to actually hit the Colossus, you must wait until it slams its fists down. Another important combat manoeuvre is the evasive role; to perform this, simply push the Right Analog Stick in the direction that you wish to roll. Just before the Colossus' fists connect with the ground, roll out of the way to avoid taking damage. Position yourself next to the Colossus' fists, press L2 to use Poseidon's Rage and rapidly tap the Circle button to increase the damage dealt.

Once you have damaged the Colossus enough, it becomes incapacitated for a short while. There is a catapult atop a platform on the left side of this area, hop up onto the platform and hold R1 to draw the boulder back, then release the button to launch it at the stunned Colossus. You receive some Red and Blue Orbs, but the Colossus remains standing. Kratos, being the rational individual he is, decides that, since there isn't another boulder handy, the only logical option is to board the catapult and launch himself at the Colossus. Approach the catapult and press R1 to hop on. Rapidly tap the B button to charge the Kratos-occupied catapult.

When Kratos has been launched into the air, ready yourself as the fatalities from the first God of War return in its sequel. You have to quickly tap the buttons that appear onscreen to damage the Colossus. If you miss a button or press the wrong button, the Colossus will catch Kratos and send him back to the platform below.

After the battle, you are forcibly sent to a different area. Hold the X button to descend further underwater, swim to the end of the tunnel and hold the R1 button to gather strength then release the button to smash through the barrier. Use the Triangle button to get above the water. Hop out of the water onto the platform and climb up the ladder. There is a save altar at the top, as well as a lever. To use the save altar, stand near it and press the R1 button. Approach the lever on the left side of the platform and hold R1 to pull it. Jump up into the air and press the R1 button to attach Athena's Blades to the hook. Swing over to the other side by pressing the X button to detach from the hook once you are swinging over the platform.

Jump up the two platforms in the next area and lift up the gate above them. There are a few enemy legionnaires to fight, but they are easily dealt with. Move towards the ladder in the distance and climb it to the upper level. The Colossus of Rhodes attempts to crush you with its giant foot, mash the Circle button to push the Colossus away. There is a Green/Blue Orb chest to the left of the ladder at the end of the way. A Red Orb chest can also be found by searching the area directly across from the same ladder.

Simply move up against the wall and Kratos will attach himself to that wall. Climb upwards, move to the right and above the break created by the Colossus, then move to the far left side and leap off of the wall onto the platform below. Open the Red Orb chest on the platform, then get back onto the wall and start ascending. To move faster, you can tap the X button and push the Left Analog Stick in the direction that you wish to move.

BOSS BATTLE: Colossus of Rhodes 2
After reaching the top, you will once again encounter the Colossus of Rhodes. Hop down off of the walkway and immediately move to the far right side of this area. Use the hook to swing over the gap and position yourself on the end of the walkway next to the Colossus. Poseidon's Rage still helps here, but not nearly as much. While the Colossus rests its left arm on the side of the walkway, either use Poseidon's Rage or attack the arm with Athena's Blades. You really need to use the evasive roll here as the Colossus' physical attacks deal a large amount of damage.

Colossus Returns
Colossus Returns
Once you have damaged the Colossus enough, it becomes stunned and places its damaged arm on the opposite end of this area. You have more than enough time to make it across. Simply run back towards the grapple point, swing across, then approach the Colossus' arm. Press the Circle button to start the takedown. Press the buttons that appear onscreen accurately and in a timely manner to damage the Colossus. Once the sequence is over and Kratos is back on solid ground, return to the other side of the area.

If you do not have any magic left, you will just have to use Athena's Blades to continue damaging the Colossus. While you are attacking, stay on the far end of the walkway, this limits the number of attacks the Colossus can use. Be careful though because it will not sit idly-by while you slash at it. Get a few normal attacks (Square) in, then run and roll out of the way before you take any damage. Some of its other attacks can be hard to avoid so you will generally want to wait until it raises its right fist to slam it down on the ground before you roll out of the way.

When the Colossus has been damaged enough, it will become stunned, resting its damaged arm on the side you are currently on. Approach the arm and again, press the Circle button to start the takedown. Once you are in the Colossus' grasp, quickly alternate between the L1 and R1 buttons to free yourself.

Rhodes Palace
After the battle you are ejected to Rhodes Palace. Jump up onto the platform above the chariot and lift up the large door. Beyond the door, you reach a closed gate with archer legionnaires behind it. You can't get to them through this gate, so instead turn right and move towards the save altar. Use the altar to save your progress, then start down the hallway on the right, just before the altar. A small group of legionnaires occupy this hallway. Quickly dispose of them and continue down the hall.

Two archers stand on either side of the large door in the next room. Press and hold the L1 button to use Athena's Blades as a shield against the incoming arrows, moving towards the archers before they fire again. Once you are close enough, simply press the Circle button to grab hold of the archer and quickly kill him.

With the archers removed, turn around and move to the bottom left corner of this room. There is a griffin statue along the wall that you must use to open the gates. Grab hold of the griffin statue by pressing and holding the R1 button, then drag it over to the pressure sensitive button on the floor just before the pair of gates. Proceed to push the statue past the button so that Kratos is standing on the button. While on the button, press and hold the X button to gather strength and then release it to kick the statue beyond the first gate. While Kratos is still standing on the button, quickly move off of it and push up on the Right Analog Stick to roll through the gate before it closes.

URN OF GAIA: This is the first of the Urns that can be found within God of War II. For more information on Urns, check out the 'Urn Locations' section. While between the two gates, drag the griffin statue to the right and push it down the hall there. As you are pushing the statue down the hall, you will more than likely notice the three chests on the ledge up above. Continue pushing the griffin statue until it is up against the wall. Now destroy the griffin part of the statue so only the pedestal remains. Hop up onto the pedestal, then jump and grab hold of the ledge. The Urn of Gaia is in the unmarked chest.

Between the two gates, drag the statue onto the button and proceed through the gates. Down the next hall, you will encounter a group of legionnaires. There are three archers at the back; move past the infantry and kill the archers first. Against a large group of legionnaires, the best move to use is 'Cyclone of Chaos,' which can be performed by holding the L1 button, then tapping Square. When the coast is clear, open the Red Orb Chest across from the elevator, then step onto the elevator and pull the level to ride it up to higher ground.

Guess who! That's right, the Colossus of Rhodes is back for another beating. Slash at its eye until it flinches, then quickly roll back to avoid taking damage. The Colossus smashes the wall, causing it to collapse. Your goal is to get the Blade of Olympus that has been cast down from the sky. Move to the top right corner of the platform you are standing on, jump up and grab hold of the ledge. Jump up again and climb up the second ledge to reach the walkway above. The walkway is littered with legionnaires; quickly take them out using Cyclone of Chaos. There are archers stationed midway down the walkway and another pair on either side of the door at the end of the walkway.

Press R1 to kick in the door at the end and head inside. Open the Green Orb chest to restore your health bar, then smash the glass window straight ahead. Start moving across the wooden boards. There is a troop of archer legionnaires belowyou won't get far unless you take them out first. Once you are over the troop's position, drop down and kill all of the archers. With all of the archers removed, drop down to the lower ground and move to the bottom right corner to find the ladder leading back up to the boards. Carefully move across the boards, and mind the gap. If you fall, just climb back up the ladder and try again.

Board Crossing

Use the altar to save your progress. Climb up the ladder and slide down the chain. Before you proceed, be sure that both your magic and health bars are full. If they aren't, open the Green and Blue Orb chests. When you are ready, lift up the gate between the two chests and proceed outside. Run across the bridge quickly as it is swiftly destroyed by the Colossus.

BOSS BATTLE: Colossus of Rhodes 3
Let's settle this once and for all, shall we? Unfortunately, you can't just pluck the Blade of Olympus out of the ground. Before you can retrieve the blade, you must first stun the Colossus. The attacks it uses here are quite easy to avoid, just jump up when it slams down its fists and avoid stepping on the cracks that appear.

Colossus of Rhodes

The Colossus' broken hand is lying on the top right part of the platform. Approach it, press R1 to take hold of it, and launch it towards the Colossus' face. Doing so stuns the Colossus momentarily so quickly run over to the Blade of Olympus and hold R1 to drain all of your experience into the blade. You must do this two more times before the blade can be wielded. With your experience gone, you must next drain your magic into the blade. To stun the Colossus again, simply stand before him at the edge of the platform and use Poseidon's Rage to damage it. Remember to tap the Circle button to increase the damage that is dealt by the magic.
Broken Hand
Broken Hand
With the Colossus stunned again, return to the blade and take hold of it until your magic bar is depleted. Things become more difficult now, as you no longer have a magic bar and therefore are unable to cast Poseidon's Rage. To make matters worse, since all of your experience was drained by the Blade of Olympus, Athena's Blades are now at level one, which means you can no longer perform any advanced moves such as Cyclone of Chaos. Fortunately, however, the Colossus can't stand much of a beating from Athena's Blades, even in their diminished state.

Blade of Olympus
Blade of Olympus
You're going to have to be cautious, though, as it strikes out frequently and the attacks can be quite damaging. Try your best to dodge the Colossus' attacks, although this can be quite difficult due to its long arms. Once you have dealt enough damage, the Colossus becomes incapacitated once more, allowing you to drain your remaining power into the Blade of Olympus.

With the Blade of Olympus in hand, approach the damaged colossus and start slashing away at its arm. Careful, it uses its handless arm to produce blue fire, so roll back as it raises its left arm to avoid taking damage. Continue hitting the Colossus' arm until the Circle appears above its head, signifying that it is ready to be boarded.

Inside the Colossus of Rhodes
Kratos leaps and slashes the Colossus' visible wound, creating an opening. You are now within the Colossus of Rhodes. Jump up onto the ledge and kill the legionaries along the wooden walkway. Move down this walkway, hopping across the gaps along the way. Eventually, you will reach a blue board that prohibits you from proceeding. At this point, walk across the plank of wood that branches off from the walkway and approach the blue power core.

Press R1 to insert the Blade of Olympus into the power core, effectively diffusing it. Move back to the end of the walkway and jump onto the climbable wall. Move across the wall and drop down onto the platform on the other side. Jump up and grab hold of the rope at the end of the walkway and use it to get to the walkway at the other end. Kill the legionnaires along the way, then jump up onto the ledge and step onto the board. The plank leads directly to a blue board, so turn left when it branches off and follow the plank to the second power core. Destroy the chains and press R1 to drive the blade in.

Walk back across the plank and cross the previously blocked portion. Jump onto the climbable wall at the end of the walkway and use it to get to the walkway on the other side. To get to the next power core, step onto the ledge surrounding the circular cage and start moving to the left along it. When you reach the blue board, press R1 to lower Kratos down by his hands, allowing you to continue moving along the ledge. Once you are past the board, press X to climb back up then move off of the ledge and onto the walkway. Destroy the chains surrounding the core, then press R1 to deactivate the core.

GORGON EYE (1/37): Hold it! Before you climb up that rope, while standing on the lower portion of the walkway, turn left and climb up the rope wall. An unmarked chest containing the first Gorgon Eye sits on the platform. Collect six Gorgon Eyes to increase the size of the green health bar.

Climb up the rope on the platform here and jump off onto the walkway above. Walk along and climb up the ladder to the upper platform. There is a lever on this platform; pull the level to lower the pendulum. With the pendulum lowered, drop back down to the walkway below and strike it a few times to get it swinging. Climb back up the ladder and pull the lever again to call the pendulum back up. While the pendulum swings it will deflect the beams of energy, allowing you to move across the rope unharmed. Wait until the pendulum swings and cuts off the beam of energy in front of you, then tap the X button to quickly move across that portion of the rope while it is safe.

Once you are safely across, move to the end of the walkway and destroy the final power core. Quickly hop across the platforms and exit the Colossus through its open mouth. Slowly move towards the Blade of Olympus, then sit back and watch the events that transpire.

Return From Hades
After the cutscene, make your way back to the surface by moving across the walls. While climbing, press Triangle to perform a heavy Attack. This should clear away some of the clawing hands. Once you are back on the surface, locate the only alive Spartan on the left side of this area and press R1 to speak to him. Following the cutscene, approach Pegasus and mount the steed.
