Introduction

We have waited for so long for this game to come out, and now it's finally here. Polophony promised us a wider variety of cars, better graphics, more tracks and an improved season mode. But have Polophony succeeded in meeting our expectations? Or is it worth buying after all?

Graphics

Polophony promised us better graphics and, my god, they've given Gran Turismo 4 such good eyecandy, your eyes will be sore in minutes. The background of each track has been improved slightly, and the look of the cars have been improved aswell. When I first saw Gran Turismo 3's graphics, I thought it was real. I didn't think they could be improved. But Gran Turismo has improved and it has stretched the Playstation 2 to it's very limit. Graphically, one of the best looking games ever on the PS2.

Sound

Can you hear the roar of the engines? I sure can. With Gran Turismo 4, it has the most real sounding engines in any game. If you play your own music over the top, you start to miss the roar of the Nissan Motol's engine, or the high-pitched rumble of the F1 car. To top it all off, GT4 boasts an incredible selection of different songs. These include soft rock, hip-hop and even classical tunes. And if you like the sound of a song, you can play it back in the jukebox. Well done polophony, bravo.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Gran Turismo is a one of a kind. In the first one or two months, you are jumping for joy, dancing round like a lunatic, singing "Gran Turismo 4 is the best racer in the world." You will have to get this game to see what it is like to race a 1000+ bhp supercar around a city course such as Cote d'Azur (Monaco for all you F1 fans) or laughing while the pathetic 1886 Mercedes Carriage Cart tries to reach it's top speed of 12mph. As far as simulators go, this is the most realistic of all PS2 games. The only thing that lets the gameplay down is the fact that this is not a game for casual gamers. To get the full enjoyment out of this, you will need to spend ages on this game. But apart from that great gameplay.

Lastability

Oh dear, what happened here? After you've raced the F1 car, or any supercar, you start to get dissapointed. Gone are the days when you used to dance in joy; after all the fun you put the joypad down, put GT4 on the shelf, and never touch it again. You start to feel as though GT4 wasn't as good as it was made out to be. The reason for this is because it is too repetitive. Once you've driven around all the tracks, and cruised in all the best rides, the interest is gone in Gran Turismo 4. Something had to be added to get you hooked a little more longer.

Overall

Overall, I would give this game 8/10. The graphics and the sound are nearly perfect for the PS2's standards, which is why I gave GT4 a high mark. It would of only got full marks if the lifespan would of been better. In the gameplay section, I mentioned that only gamers who were willing to put enough time into this would get full enjoyment of this game. Because the game has average lifespan, gamers won't get full enjoyment of the game. It is this factor that has let the game down. To summarize, this is a game for only hardcore gamers that like racing simulation games. These people would probably enjoy the game more, and therefore would give the lifespan a higher rating. Well done Polophony. You've created a great game. You deserve a pat on the back...

Final Score: 88%
