Super Mario Sunshine: FAQ and Walkthrough For: Nintendo Gamecube By Lee Trott AKA Demo Version 1.5 Started 27/3/05 Email: Epsilon350@Yahoo.co.uk GameFAQs username: _Itsumademo_ Do NOT use this guide on any site without my permission or face certain doom. Hello! Welcome to my Super Mario Sunshine walkthrough. I bet you all think i'm crazy, writing about some old game like SMS, which came out a couple of years ago. But this game can be pretty dang hard at times, so I thought i'd write a guide, considering I know my fair share of secrets and hints. This is my first EVER walkthrough, so please don't hesitate to send any feedback to my email address. Thank you. Now, onto the guide. :) IMPORTANT: This guide only shows the Shine Sprites and how to get them, including the ones you get from collecting blue coins. It does NOT show the location of the blue coins, only the Shine Sprites. Got it? Version History: Version 1.0: Guide finished, but forgot to put in the 100 coin shine sprites. Version 1.5: All shines covered. -Contents- 1) Story 2) Controls 3) Items 4) Walkthrough -Delfino Aistrip -Delfino Plaza -Bianco Hills -Ricco Harbor -Gelato Beach -Pinna Park -Sirena Beach -Noki Bay -Pianta Village -Corona Mountain 5) Frequently asked questions (FAQ) 6) Secrets 7) Credit 'n stuff -Story- Having just given Bowser's Butt a firm kicking; Mario, Princess Peach, Toadsworth and the Toad servants decide to take a vacation. The game begins on a plane, where Mario, Peach and Toadsworth are watching a video, telling them about their destination, the "sun-drenched paradise" that is Isle Delfino. While Mario and Toadsworth are daydreaming about seafood and theme park rides, Peach notices an odd shadow jumping around on the video that looks just like Mario. When they land, they find that the whole island has been covered in goop by someone, and accoring to the wanted posters, he looks exactly like Mario! The locals, not wasting time, quickly arrest Mario and he is put on trial. After Mario is found guilty and thrown in prison, they demand that he doesn't leave until he cleans up the whole island. Luckily, Mario has found FLUDD, a Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device. Using this machine, can he get rid of the goop on the island? And can he reunite all the Shine Sprites, the source of the Island's Power, or will Isle Delfino remain dark forever? That's where you come in! -Controls- This is one hardcore platform game, so you're going to need some mad skills if you want to complete it. This section covers all the moves in the game. A - Jump/Forward Text/Choose B - Action Button, eg: Open Doors, Pick up items. Control Stick - Move C Stick - Change camera angle L - Move camera behind Mario, aim FLUDD, Ground Pound R - Use FLUDD to squirt water. (Fludd moves explained later) Z - Use Map Y - Change to FLUDD aim view. X - Get off Yoshi/ Change FLUDD Nozzles Special moves Triple Jump: Press A three times to do a forward flip. Ground Pound: Jump with A and press L in the air. Side Somersault: Move one way, tilt the control stick the other end and press A. Example: Move left, turn right, then jump. Spin Jump: Spin the Control Stick 360 then press A. Pick up items: Just press B to pick things up and B to throw them. Dive: Run, then press B. You can also do this in the air. FLUDD Moves Squirt and run: Lightly press R. Using this, you can move and squirt water at the same time. Stand and squirt: Hold R until it clicks. By holding down R tighly, you can stand still and aim while squirting. Backflip squirt: I'm pretty sure this isn't in the instruction manual. :) Just hold down R tightly, then press A to backflip. You'll cover a wide area with water. Really useful for the "Cleaning Sirena Beach" mission. Spin squirt: Perform a spin jump (Rotate control stick and press A) Then hold down R. You'll spin around like a washing machine, squirting water everywhere. As you can guess, this move isn't very accurate. Hover mode: With the hover nozzle equipped as your second setting, hold down R to hover across obstacles. Jet Pack mode: With the jet nozzle equipped as your second setting, hold down R to build up power, then shoot into the air. Propeller mode: With the propeller nozzle equipped as your second setting, hold down R to build up power, then hold it down to blast away like a speeding bullet. This uses up a LOT of water, but if you use it across the water, you can speed along and not have to stop and refill. Real fun, too. Yoshi Mode When you rescue Yoshi, you can ride him. Swallow: Press B near an enemy or fruit. Flutter Kick: Hold down A in the air. Dismount: Press X. Spit out juice: Hold R, but remember to keep Yoshi topped up with Fruit so he doesn't starve. -Items- Shine Sprites: The power source on Isle Delfino. There's 120 of these in the game, and you'll get one every time you complete an episode. The more you have, the brighter Isle Delfino gets. Coins: Of course you want coins! These are yellow, and are spread across everywhere. Collect 100 coins in a level to get an extra Shine Sprite. Blue Coins: Rare, and often hidden away. Collect ten of these and trade them for a Shine Sprite in the hut near Ricco Harbor entrance. Red Coins: There's often an episode in a level where you have to collect 8 of these. When you do, you'll get another Shine. 1-Up Mushrooms: These are green mushrooms. Collect 'em to give you an extra life. You'll DEFINATELY want lots of these. Water Bottles: Collect these to refill your FLUDD when there isn't any water about. -Walkthrough- DELFINO AIRSTRIP 1st Shine: This is your first shine. Talk to the man with the guitar to learn how to call up the map. Look next to the other Pianta and you'll find the FLUDD. After a tutorial, try it out by squirting the M tags on the wall. Run back to the big pool of goop, and squirt the middle with your FLUDD. A giant Pirahna Plant will emerge. This is the first boss, so it's pretty easy. Squirt away some goop so you don't slip around, then stand back and press Y. Aim for the plant's head. When he opens his mouth, use the FLUDD and squirt water at him! After three hits, the plant will vanish and you'll have your first Shine. 2nd Shine: You cant get this now. Come back later in the game, when you can pay 10 coins to get back to the airstrip. Stomp on the red switch and collect all 8 red coins in the time limit for another Shine. DELFINO PLAZA Bianco Hills Entrance This is where you'll see Shadow Mario for the first time. He'll steal Peach and run like the wind. He'll leave bits of gloop behind him. Ignore them and run after him. You can lightly hold R and run after him, squirting as you go. Another way is to get back a bit, wait until he stops, then aim with Y and squirt. I prefer the first method, but it's your choice. After that, another pool of goop will appear in Delfino Plaza. Once again, it's another Pirahna Plant fight. Use the same method as before, and the Great Pianta statue will rise. Shadow Mario will write an M on the wall and jump inside. Spray the M and jump inside after him! Ricco Harbor Entrance Once you have three shines, ANOTHER pile of goop will appear with... guess what? Yup. A Pirahna Plant. Same tactics, but he'll take six hits this time. He'll vanish, and a hut will rise. Here, you can trade 10 blue coins for a Shine. Just outside is another M tag. Jump inside to reach Ricco Harbor! Gelato Beach Entrance Once you have five shines, the lighthouse will get swallowed by a pile of goop. Yay! Time for another Pirahna Plant fight. I bet you're loving these, eh? Once again, squirt it's mouth with water. Yawn. The lighthouse will rise once more, and the portal to Gelato Beach will be open. No more Pirahna plants for a while! Wahey! Pinna Park Entrance Once you have ten shines, a submarine will appear in Delfino Plaza. You'll see a cut scene where Shadow Mario legs it into the submarine with Peach. The submarine will speed off to Pinna Park. Use the red cannon nearby and Mario will blast off at high speed, right in the direction of Pinna Park! Noki Bay Entrance I'm pretty sure this happens when you complete Bianco hills episode 5. If that doesn't work, just get 20 shines. I done both the same time, so i'm not quite sure what triggers it. Some people say episode 5... but you'll have to find out for yourself, really. :-P Anyway, once you do one of the above things (again, don't ask! I dont know!) a ray of light will shine down onto the Shine Sprite image in Delfino Plaza. Stand on the image, press Y and look to the sun (anyone who's played Mario 64 will have done this before. Yeah, you know what I mean) and you'll be warped to Noki bay! Sirena Beach Entrance When you have about 30 shines, you'll see Shadow Mario running around the town with a Yoshi egg. Run after him and squirt him with water... again. I bet you're getting used to this, so this will be a peice of cake. Now you can ride Yoshi! Of course, when you see him in the levels, he'll just be an egg. Feed him the fruit he's thinking of, and he'll hatch! Hatch the Yoshi in town and then climb up to the rooftops with Yoshi's ace jumping skills. There will be a red pipe with a... um, a giant pineapple blocking it. Yeah, don't ask. Anyway, get Yoshi to gobble it down, then jump in the pipe to get to Sirena Beach! Pianta Village Entrance When you have about 30 shines, Shadow Mario will run around town with the FLUDD's Jet pack nozzle. Chase after him (AGAIN) and hose him down. Y'know, the normal routine. Wow, if the final level was just you chasing him and squirting him, it'd be a peice of cake to complete, eh? :-P Anyway, once he's good and wet, take the Jet Pack attachment. Try it out first, if you haven't already encountered it before (which really, I hope you have by now). Then Jet boost to the top of the Shine Gate. Jump in the red pipe to get to Pianta Village! Corona Mountain Entrance Once you've chased Shadow Mario in all the levels (Another way to open the entrance is to have at least 70 shines), use the Rocket nozzle to get behind the shine gate. The path to Corona Mountain will now be open. Phew! That's all the levels open! DELFINO PLAZA SHINES There's a hell of a lot of shines here. Some of them are easy to get, and some of them aren't. Here's a list of them all! (Note: These aren't in any particular order) 1st shine: On the beach, keep squirting water until you see the pattern of a shine. Use the hover nozzles to get the shine that appears. (Note: you'll need to open the Gelato Beach entrance before you get this) 2nd shine: Look around Delfino Plaza for a house with the door open. Walk inside and talk to the man to accept his challenge. Break all the boxes in the time limit for another shine. 3rd shine: Same place as before, but the boxes are in different places. Smash them all for another shine. 4th shine: Once you get the Jet pack, jump to the top of the bell tower and clean it for a shine. 5th shine: Again, you'll need the Jet pack. Jump to the other bell tower and clean it, only this time you'll need to drop down into the sewers and jump out underneath the tower to get the shine. 6th shine: Using the Jet Pack, jump to the top of the lighthouse. Then Jump into the air again with the Jet Pack and perform a butt slam when you're at your highest point. You'll come down so fast your butt will be quite literally on fire. (Owch!) When you land, you'll break the cap on the top of the lighthouse and a shine will fly above you. Perform another boost jump and grab it. 7th shine: Hover across the platforms by the beach and jump into the green pipe for an obstacle course. Slide down the route and use the hover pack to guide yourself when you need to. Make it to the end for a shine. 8th shine: A very fun shine, this one. Grab the propeller pack by the statue and then boost into the ocean. Direct yourself near the platforms where you got the last shine and smash through the door beneath the pipe. To get through this obstacle course, use your propeller pack to jump over the platforms. Jump when you get to the end of the platform, or you won't make it. Once you get to the shine, stop and grab it. Peice of cake. Wasn't that fun, eh? 9th shine: Jet pack up behind the shine gate. Squirt the Giant Shine and clean it. Get rid of all the goop and it'll cough up a shine for you. 10th shine: Look for a bunch of palm tress near the entrance to Pinna Park and use the Hover nozzle to get across them. Eventually, you'll come to another... obstacle course. Fantastic. Grab all the red coins for another shine. The Y aiming view comes in handy here, so make sure you look everywhere to find the coins. 11th shine: Once you have the propeller, smash into the door near the tower where the two policemen are. Another obstacle course is inside, with a shine at the end. 12th shine: Swim to the island with the stranded Pianta. You'll see a yellow bird on the island. Spray it with water and it will take off. Use Y to aim and keep squirting water at it, and it'll give up a shine. Remember, if you see a yellow bird anywhere, be sure to spray it with water. 13th shine: Near the entrance to Noki Bay is a boat that takes a route through here. Jump on the top of it, and when it passes under the yellow coin, jump up and reach it. If you jump high enough, you'll get warped to an obstacle course. This is like pinball, only Mario gets more blows to the head than normal. Bounce on the trampoline and try to aim yourself into the different slots on the board. Collect all 8 red coins and another shine sprite will appear for you to collect. 14th shine: Jump up to the rooftops and look for a Pianta. If you give him a coin, he'll throw you. Talk to him when you can see the building in front of you with bars across the windows. He should throw you through the bars to get the shine inside. If he misses, find another coin and try again. 15th shine: This one's hard... to get to, that is. You'll need to get Yoshi to the island with the shipwrecked Pianta, but as you know, Yoshi sinks like a stone. You'll need a hitch a ride on the ferry boats, jumping from one to the next, which is easier said than done. When (If?) you reach the island, squirt the orange goop off the pipe and jump inside for another obstacle course. BIANCO HILLS Woo-hoo, your first SMS level. Let's see how you can do, huh? This level isn't too hard, but the obstacle courses might throw you for a loop if you've never played before. Let's get started, shall we? Onto Episode one: The Phantom menace! Oops, I mean. Road to the big windmill. Episode 1: Road to the Big Windmill A nice easy start, but you'll soon fight a familar foe... You'll start in the village. Make your way around and find a waterwheel. Jump on it and ride it across to the other side. Spray away the goop, and look out for the small enemies that jump out at you. Make your way to the big pile of goop and squirt the middle. TA-DAAA! Another Pirahna Plant. Again, keep squirting it's mouth when it's open and it'll soon be bested. Grab the shine that it leaves behind. Episode 2: Down With Petey Pirahna! Your first REAL boss fight. Excited? Yeah, I bet you are. Make your way over to where you fought the Pirahna Plant and you'll see a bridge. Hover over the gap and make your way to the top of the hill. To get past the thorned roots coming out of the wall, hover around them. When you reach the top, you'll need to ride the windmill to get up further. There's Petey Pirahna! As soon as you get near him, the roof will cave in. Squirt away the enemies for an easier time. Petey will open his mouth from time to time. When he does, aim with the Y button and squirt water at his mouth. Keep squirting until he gets full up and he'll keel over. Power bounce on his belly. Repeat this again twice and he'll be gone... for now. Grab the shine and you're outta here! Episode 3: The Hillside Cave Secret Make your way to the lake near the windmill. Hover across the platforms to your right and make your way to the hillside cave. Here's your first obstacle course (Unless you happened to get some of the Delfino Plaza shines). Simply make your way across the course to the shine at the other end. Take your time, it's pretty simple. On the way, if you see any nails, be sure to ground pound them, a 1-up might come out. That's it's way of telling you: "If you suck at this level, here's a life to try again." You'll get another shine sprite in no time. Episode 4: Red Coins of Windmill Village Here's your first red coin hunt. They're all in the village, which is pretty simple. Make your way to the rooftops to find more. Spin the contraptions with your FLUDD, and they'll move the platforms around. Collect 8 red coins and a shine sprite will appear. Done and done! Episode 5: Petey Pirahna Strikes Back I told you you wasn't finished with ol' Petey! To get to him, make your way across the village and spray down the Pianta on the west side of town. He'll chuck you to a ledge. Make your way to the top and you'll come across a field where Petey is sleeping on the other side. Let one of the balloon creatures grab onto your FLUDD and then build up water. Shoot them at Petey to wake him up, and he'll fly around town. Jump back down and get another balloon creature on your FLUDD. Find Petey, aim with Y and shoot it at him! This will bring him down to the ground. Use the same tactics as before, squirting water in his mouth, then ground pounding his stomach. Repeat this until he vanishes once and for all. Grab the shine! Whew. Episode 6: The Secret of the Dirty Lake The first bit where you're likely to get stuck, but not too hard. Make your way over to the lake, which is now polluted. This speaks to your brain. It says "Don't swim in this lake, bonehead." Jump on one of the leaves, but be careful, they cant stand your tubby butt for too long before they vanish. Squirt your FLUDD behind you to make it move. Jump from one leaf to the next, using them like boats until you reach a cave. Jump on the FLUDD propeller box so you can use it in this level whenever you want. Walk into the cave. Shadow Mario will snatch your FLUDD again, so you're on your own here. But you still got me. Ain't you lucky? The red and blue platforms flip at certain intervals. TAKE YOUR TIME. That's the best information i've got for ya. Once you've got past them, you'll jump on a white box. Stay on it, and it'll guide you to the next part. Avoid the red traingles, then jump on another box. This bit is hell, I can tell you. Look at all those platforms! Again, take your time. There's no time limit. You may need to jump on a platform, wait for one to flip and then keep jumping back on forth between them so you don't fall off. Just do this part slowly, make your way to the right and then jump to get the shine. Job done... blimey. Have a cuppa, the next bit's easier. Episode 7: Shadow Mario on the Loose Time to chase that fake Mario again. He's got some mad jumping skills. If he wall kicks and gets to the rooftops, do the same. Mirror his moves. Keep squirting him, and he'll vanish, leaving another shine. (Note: The 7th episode of each level involves you chasing Shadow Mario.) Episode 8: The Red Coins of the Lake Another red coin hunt, only this time the coins are scattered across the lake as well. Use the ropes get the red coins that are up high. Look everywhere, high and low. Get all 8 and another shine is yours. SECRET SHINES There are two secret shines on each level. I'll tell you where they are too, because i'm a nice guy. 1st secret shine: Go back to Episode 3. Go to the obstacle course and ground pound the red switch. Collect all 8 red coins in the time limit for your first secret shine sprite. 2nd secret shine: Yeah, you know what's coming next... Go back to Episode 6 and get to the obstacle course. Ground pound the switch, collect 8 coins. Again, take your time. RICCO HARBOR Tsk! All those trees and countryside are for wussies! This is more like it. Big sweaty sailors carrying big boxes around the port. Arr, maties! On second thoughts... give us the countryside. Episode 1: Gooper Blooper Breaks Out Another boss fight, right here, right now. Let's lay the smack-down on this squid. From the start, make your way to the left and onto the boat. Climb the mesh and jump onto the platform. Jump onto the mesh and climb around to the right. Punch the door and jump on the platform. Make your way to the left, near the market area. See those boxes? Urgh... what the HECK IS THAT?! Do the inhumane thing. Press B and pull out the... protruding tentacle. Now is the breaking out of Gooper Blooper, as mentioned in the title. You'll see goop on Gooper's face. Wash it away with your FLUDD, but be careful because as soon as he gets water in his eyes he'll whip with his tentacles. Jump quickly, and try to land on one. Pull it with B until it snaps off. (Gah, you're so cruel!) Get rid of about three of them. You dont need to snap them all, so save the poor thing some pain, will ya?! If you haven't washed the goop from his face, you won't be able to do this part, so wash him now. Grab on the cork his mouth and PULL PULL PULL! Wait until his eyes turn purple and let it go. It'll snap back and bean 'im right between the eyes. You're not done yet! He'll bounce back into action, so wash his face and repeat the process of snapping all his tentacles. Then grab the cork. Let go of the cork, and it'll smash into his face and send him flying into the ocean. Problem solved! Of course, you cant keep a good boss down, so remember how to beat him. Grab the shine and you're done! Episode 2: Blooper Surfing Safari Head over to the right, and jump across the logs. You'll see the BIG DADDY OF BLOOPER SURFING! Totally, dude. Jump onto the squid of your choice (Green being the slowest, purple being the fastest, yellow being average) and ride it to the left, into the cave. Time for your surfin' challenge. Everybody was SUUURFIIN', SURFING USA! Sorry. A timer will appear on screen. Again, jump on your squid of POWAH' and use your mad skills to navigate the course. Do one lap in less than 45 seconds and you'll have another shine on your hands. Remember your squid can JUMP. Duh. ¬_¬ Episode 3: The Caged Shine Sprite For this shine, you'll have to be extra-careful and tip-toe around... you don't want to fall off. Really. If you DO want to fall off, i'm worried about you. Go outside and play. Anyway, make your way to the right and jump on the boat. Exterminate the bloopers and jump on the crane hook that's moving back and forth. Use it to jump to the mesh on the other side. You'll have to navigate your way to the top of the level using the blue girders. Follow the arrows carefully until you get to the Jet Nozzle. You CAN use it to jump on the trampolines and into the cage, but this way is much quicker. Drop AAAALLL the way down to where the Sea Captain is and walk beside him. Use your jet to blast off upwards and grab onto the mesh. Flip the gate and grab the shine. Episode 4: The Secret of Ricco Tower Another obstacle course, but this one is easy. Grab the Jet Nozzle and make your way to the top of the tower. Go inside. You'll have to run across the rotating planks of wood. This is easy! Get to the end for another shine. If you die, frankly, i'm ashamed. ...Nah, i'm kidding, we all mess up sometimes... >_> Episode 5: Gooper Blooper Returns Oh, you can't keep a good boss down, no, you can't keep a good boss DOOOWWWN. Gooper's now on the helipad, so make your way to the left, grab the Jet Nozzle and blast upwards swing across the mesh and flip the gate to meet your old friend. Same tactics as before... But your reward is a FIENDISHLY difficult level with SPIKES and LAVA and ALL KINDS of NASTIES! Nah, i'm messing with you. Had you going though, didn't I? It's a shine sprite. Episode 6: Red Coins on the Water I hope you've got some mad surfing skills for this. Go to the right once more and slam the red switch. Jump on your blooper of choice and surf it around to get all of the red coins. For the one in between the two boats, go back to the start of the course and immediately turn left. Go through the middle of them to get the coin, and then make your way to the start again for the shine. DON'T CRASH, WHATEVER YOU DO! Especially coming this far. Jump and grab the shine while still on the squid. Whew... that was a close one, huh? Episode 7: Shadow Mario Revisited Quit yo' Jibba-Jabba Shadow Mario! I 'aint takin' no trouble from anyone, y'hear me, sucka'?! Once again, it's a tedious chase. Run. Squirt. Only this time he'll climb on the scaffolding. Make your way to the top to catch him up. Give him a thorough soaking and he'll cough up another shine. "Until next time, ye' wee rascal!" Episode 8: Yoshi's Fruit Adventure You'll need to rescue Yoshi before you can do this. See "Sirena Beach Entrance" covered earlier in the guide. Go to the place where you first fought Gooper Blooper. You'll see a machine which gives out fruit. Stomp on the switch and it'll cough up a fruit. Keep alternate stomping on the right, then the left, then the right again until you get a Durian. Take it to Yoshi and he'll leap out of his egg and gobble it down. Make your way to the fish leaping out of the water and squirt them with Juice to turn them into platforms. Keep turning them into platforms 'til you can reach the cliff, then eat the coconut to change Yoshi's colour. Now squirt the fish and they'll turn into platforms, but they'll move differently. Use them to get to the orange goop, then spray it with Yoshi's juice for a shine. SECRET SHINES 1st secret shine: Go back to Episode 2, and complete the race in under 40 seconds for another shine. 2nd secret shine: Go back to Episode 4, and enter Ricco Tower. Stomp the switch and collect 8 red coins in the time limit. This should be pretty easy. GELATO BEACH This is more like it! Warm beaches... Giant caterpillars... Weird ducks that throw you hundreds of feet up in the air... Hey wait! The last two things aren't as good as the beaches! Get the shines and get outta here before you bruise your ego. This level has the easiest episodes in the game! Episode 1: Dune Bud Castle Secrets Starting with an obstacle course sounds pretty evil, huh? Nope! This one is so easy even your little brother or sister could do it. Go to the middle of the beach and spray the dune bud. (It's a green plant) It's make a giant sandcastle appear. Walk through the gap in the middle. In this course, there are sand blocks which vanish after you've stepped on them. They'll re-appear after a while though, so if you make a mistake, jump onto a safe block and wait until they appear again. Make your way to the giant sandcastle at the end. Jump on the sand blocks and make your way to the top using your different jump techniques. Get the shine. No problem! Episode 2: Mirror Madness! Tilt, Slam, Bam! There's a Wiggler sleeping on the Giant Sand Bird Egg! The only way to get it off is to toast it until it's crispy, and that involves using some mirrors. Make your way to the mirror with one (1) enemy on it. Spray it, and make it teeter over the side. Now quickly run to the other side of the mirror and use the power bounce to slam it. The enemy will be sent flying. Repeat this with the other two mirrors, but another enemy gets added each time. Reflect all the mirrors onto Wiggler and he'll get toasted and fall apart. Nice! Who's up for Roasted Wiggler? Grab the shine on the beach. Episode 3: Wiggler Ahoy! Full Steam Ahead! Turns out the giant Wiggler wasn't too pleased you cooked him up a notch (BAM!) and he wants his revenge. He'll stamp around the beach. Watch his pattern and he'll walk over a dune bud. Just before he does, water the bud and it'll grow into a big mound of sand, which will trip Wiggler. When he's on his back, hover over him to where the arrow is pointing and use the power bounce move. Repeat this twice, but he'll walk over a different dune bud each time. Watch where he runs, and squirt the right bud. Once you've pounded him two more times he'll vanish and leave a shine sprite behind. Episode 4: The Sand Bird is Born This one's weird, but quite fun. Run to the top of the level where all the people are and talk to the kid. He'll tell you he's thinking of sliding down into the egg the Sand Bird hatched from. Know what you have to do next? Yeah, you got it. Slide down the brown path, jump onto the trampoline and land in the big hole in the egg. You'll get whisked off into a strange level in the sky. Look around... you're standing on the legendary Sand Bird! Find the 7 red coins on his body. When he tilts, stand on his neck so you don't fall off. The last red coin is on a platform, jump from his wings to get there and the shine will appear. Episode 5: Il Piantissimo's Sand Sprint This is your first race with this weirdo. He dresses like a Pianta. before you talk to him, get the Jet Nozzle from nearby first. This will make it easy! Now talk to him and the race will start. Use your Jet Nozzle to reach the flag way before him, and just sit back and wait until he catches you up. Easy. Grab the shine sprite, and you're done. Episode 6: Red Coins in the Coral Reef This is a nice relaxing shine to get, I can tell ya. No effort required, apart from the small amount of button-pressing you'll be doing. Swim out to the Coral Reef and get the 8 red coins. The fish can drag you down so you lose some air, but NOTHING CAN HURT YOU! YAY! Grab the 8 red coins scattered around. This is a doddle! Some of them are hidden behind plants. Get all 8 and casually walk over to the shine. Easy-peasy. Episode 7: It's Shadow Mario! After Him! Sigh. Doesn't this guy EVER QUIT?! Again, chase him and hose him down with your FLUDD. He falls, you get the shine, we're all happy. Time for the secret shines... SECRET SHINES 1st secret shine: Make your way to where the mirrors are and water the dune bud. Hose down the wall near the 3 coins to reveal the image of a shine. Grab it. 2nd secret shine: Go to Episode 1 and enter the course again. You know how it goes, stomp the switch, get the 8 red coins. Another shine for you. PINNA PARK Sweet! A theme park! No time for fun and games though, Mario's got some shine sprites to find! Plus, you'll find out the shocking truth about Shadow Mario. It's GARY COLEMAN! ...Psyche. :) Episode 1: Mecha-Bowser Appears Chase after Shadow Mario and run to the big pool. A giant robot Bowser will emerge! The manager of the park will think you're an actor, and that you're putting on a show. Right. Anyway, he gives you a roller coaster car! Once you're inside, the fun begins. Go around the track squirting any bullet bills that come near you. When you get a missle attatched to your car, aim at Mecha-Bowser and fire it with R. After several hits, he'll fall. No real tactics, but douse the fire he breathes, unless you want an extra-crispy Mario. After that, Shadow Mario will explain some important things, along with his real identity... Bowser's Son! He takes Peach and escapes to Corona Mountain. Don't worry, you'll get her back. Episode 2: The Beach Cannon's Secret Another lovely obstacle course, but this one's pretty simple. Go to the cannon on the beach and you'll find it's been taken over by a mole. A real big mole. He'll fire Bullet Bills at you. Soak them with FLUDD to make them explode. Once you get near him, he'll throw Bob-Ombs. Squirt one with water, then pick it up and throw it at the mole! After a few hits, he'll be gone. Jump in the cannon to enter the course. In this course, there's certain blocks that dissapear and reappear from time to time. When they get darker, they're going to dissapear, so move fast. Once you reach the end, you'll get another shine. Episode 3: Red Coins of the Pirate Ships Wow, this is one dangerous ride! There's not even any seats on the boats! Is this park totally risking it's customer's safety, or what?! Anyway, you'll need to hover to the boats to get some red coins. The rest are around the green mesh, so climb around until you find them all. Run up the ramp to claim your shine sprite, easy as pie. Episode 4: The Wilted Sunflowers Run along the beach to find... Yoshi Eggs? Nope. Spray them to reveal what they really are, hideous turtles. Wait for them to jump at you, then move! Once they're on their back, ground pound them. Get rid of them all for a shine. Episode 5: The Runaway Ferris Wheel This stage is ridiculously hard... that is, unless you know a ridiculously easy way of doing it. Jump across the pirate ships to the green mesh and run up the ramp. Hover over to the RIGHT side of the platform, near the sleeping Koopa. You'll have to pass through the spinning Ferris Wheel, but it IS possible. Then jump on the rope, flip the mesh and get rid of the Koopa. Alternatively, if you're either extremely hard or extremely stupid, you can go around the back of the Ferris Wheel and attempt a hard section where you flip platforms with your FLUDD. Don't bother. Get the shine, whatever way you do it. Episode 6: The Yoshi-Go-Round's Secret Another dang obstacle course. This one is pretty hard, though. Go to the Yoshi egg on the right side of the park and feed it the fruit it wants. Hatch him, and then eat the right fruit to make the Yoshi orange, unless he already is. Take him to the Yoshi-Go-Round and you'll see a missing spot on the ride where an orange Yoshi used to be. Take your Yoshi there, and you'll get warped to another course. Jump across the Yoshi-type blocks, and make your way across the moving orange platforms. The last bit is probably the hardest, but take your time. Make your way to the end for another shine sprite... Episode 7: Shadow Mario in the Park AKA: Another idiotic chase with your favourite person! Chase. Squirt. Get shine. Do you even need to read this bit? Episode 8: Roller Coaster Balloons You need to ride the roller coaster and pop all the balloons with missles. You only get three trips around the track, but that should be more than enough. Pop all 20 for another shine sprite. SECRET SHINES 1st secret shine: Go to Episode 2 and jump back in the mole's cannon. Stomp on the switch and collect all the red coins in a time limit for another shine sprite. 2nd secret shine: Go to Episode 6 and enter the Yoshi-Go-Round course again. Power Bounce on the switch, grab the coins. You get two minutes for this one, but it's a pretty long course. You can do it, man. I'm backing ya. SIRENA BEACH There's some spooky goings-on in this level, as most of the enemies are creepy ghosts! There's also a lot of electric goop, so watch Mario doesn't get several thousand volts of pain. Episode 1: The Manta Storm First, clean up some of the resort. Not all of it, the goop will only come back anyway. Talk to the Hotel Manager. After that, a giant shadow of a manta ray will float across the beach. Keep your distance, and spray water at the middle of it. It'll divide into smaller shadows. Keep up the tactic. If you're low on health, there's coins on top of trees and huts. After a while, the small Manta's that are left will start to come towards you. Eek! Run like the wind, spraying as you go. Get rid of all the shadows and another shine sprite is yours. Episode 2: The Hotel Lobby's Secret Talk to the manager to enter the hotel. There's a lot of Pink Boos floating around. DON'T GRAB THE COINS! More often than not, it's a Boo in disguise. Spray the pink ones with water and they'll turn into steps. Use them to reach the top floor, then jump into the Boo Statue's mouth. Obstacle coooouuurrrsee! For this course, jump on the flying enemies to reach the other side. Make your way to the end for a shine sprite. Episode 3: Mysterious Hotel Delfino Talk to the manager to get inside. Go into the Men's room (NO! Not the ladies room! BAD!) and there should be water dripping from the ceiling. Urgh... let's move on. Jump up at it and you'll emerge from someone's bath. Uh. Yeah. Spray the painting with water so an image of a Boo appears. Jump through the painting. Spray the doors so they display another image of a Boo, and walk through when they open. Douse the Pink Boos with your FLUDD to turn them into steps, then jump through the hole in the ceiling. Spray the bookshelf and walk through. Ground Pound the lighter tile and then break the boxes to get a pineapple. Press B to open the door. Jump down and give the Yoshi Egg the pineapple. Now, walk up the stairs until you get to the 3rd floor. Go through the open door and bounce on the bed. Get Yoshi to eat the ghosts and make your way through the maze. If you see a crack in the floor, ground pound it. If you end up in the wrong room, try again elsewhere with another crack. Once you find the right one, you'll drop into the spa where the shine is. Episode 4: The Secret of Casino Delfino Enter the hotel as normal, then talk to the Pianta to your left who's blocking a door. He'll let you in the casino. There are two big slots machines here. Spray them so they both come up with "777" and a curtain will open. Spray the question marks to flip them over. Flip them all to reveal an image of a shine sprite. Jump in the pipe that appears for an obstacle course. Whew! Going through all that trouble just to get to the course, Nintendo have done you a favour and made it incredibly easy. Make your way to the end and get the shine sprite without any hassle. Episode 5: King Boo Down Below Go back into the casino and butt-slam the purple panel. This will take you underground on a big roulette wheel! Now King Boo will appear, which you may have seen from Luigi's Mansion. Spray him, and he'll spin his slots. Three Pineapples get you fruit. Three enemy symbols get you some enemies. Question Marks throw random enemies at you. Survive long enough and they'll dissapear. A mixture of symbols make bubbles bounce around, spray them for water bottles to refill your FLUDD. When three pineapple symbols appear, fruit will rain down. Grab a chili pepper and throw it at King Boo's tongue. While he's trying to put himself out, throw another fruit at him. (It doesn't matter what) Keep repeating this to defeat him. If enemies come up, keep them out of your hair, they'll dissapear after a while. After that fiasco, another shine will appear. Episode 6: Scrubbing Sirena Beach Get your mop, bucket and FLUDD! In this episode, you've got 3 minutes to get rid of all the goop on the beach. Throw water barrels at big areas of paint. Also, rememeber your backflip squirt (R + A)! Get rid of all the goop in the time limit and you'll get another golden shine. Episode 7: Shadow Mario Checks In Same old, same old. Only this time, Boos will disguise themselves as him too, to make your lives a misery. The real Shadow Mario always has a paintbrush. Chase after him and give him a good soaking until he leaves a shine. Episode 8: Red Coins in the Hotel Power Bounce the red switch as normal. You can find some of the coins by taking the same route you did in Episode 3. There's also one in the women's bathroom. Tsk. Grab all 8 and a shine will appear. SECRET SHINES 1st secret shine: Go to Episode 2 and enter the obstacle course again. Butt-slam the switch and get all 8 red stars for your reward, another shine sprite. 2nd secret shine: Go back to Episode 4. You've got a minute to get all 8 red coins. Find 'em, get the shine, and you're done with Sirena Beach. Take a break... you deserve one. NOKI BAY You'll be underwater quite a bit this level, so be careful you don't run out of air. Use your hover nozzle to move about underwater! Also, you'll come across a springboard in this level. If you spray it with water, it'll shrink. Use this to carry it about. When you put it down, it goes back to normal, so you can jump on it to reach higher areas! Episode 1: Uncork the Waterfall It's your old friend, the mole! Scale the cliff. When you see goop in a pattern, be sure to spray it, it might reveal a ledge. When you get to the platform with a jar opposite, fill it with water, but it's got a hole in the bottom, so do it quick. Once you've reached the top, you'll battle the mole. Squirt the Bob-ombs with water and throw them back at him like you did before. This will uncork the waterfall, and you'll get another shine. Episode 2: The Boss of Tricky Ruins I told you! You CAN'T keep a good boss down! Although, after this, Gooper Blooper will be finished once and for all. That's right! Just like the Pirahna Plants, you'll be free of him! Wahey! Find ol' Grandpa and he'll tell you that you can reveal secret areas by spraying the orange squares. Press Y to aim and squirt the one above him to reveal some platforms in the wall. Use your wall kick technique to transverse them. Work your way up in this manner and you'll reach Gooper Blooper again. Same old boss, same old tactics. When he's gone, drop down the hole and get the shine sprite. Episode 3: Red Coins in a Bottle Talk to Grandpa again and he'll give you a diving helmet. He wants you to practive staying underwater. Mario will then jump into the little tiny glass bottle (Again, DONT ASK! Nintendo can do whatever the hell they want!). There's 8 red coins to collect here, so do just that. Remember, use the hover nozzle to move around. Grab all the coins then get the shine, no problem. Episode 4: Eely-Mouth's Dentist This is why you were practising! It turns out the real culprit of the polluted water in Noki Bay is a giant eel with tooth rot! Make your way to the top of the level and talk to Grandpa again. Jump down into the waterfall and the current will wash you into an opening. Here goes! Swim down to those freaky giant eyes until Eely-Mouth comes out. Position yourself over one of his teeth and use your hover nozzle to clean it. You can also spray the purple bubbles he releases for oxygen. Every now and then he'll try to suck you in and eat you. Swim away and get some coins to refill your life meter. Repeat the process. Sometimes Eely-Mouth will swim back into his hole, so lure him out again. Wash all his teeth and he'll swim away, leaving a pattern of coins shaped like a heart (AWW!) and a shine sprite. Episode 5: Il Piantissimo's Surf Swim Sick of this guy yet? Just use your hover nozzle to get over the platforms and touch the flag at the end. He'll leave behind a shine sprite. This still isn't the last time you have to race against him, though... Episode 6: The Shell's Secret Use the ropes in this level to get to the red shell. Walk in the opening to get warped to an obstacle course. Use your wall kick in this level, that's all i'm gonna say. Get to the end and another shine sprite awaits you. Episode 7: Hold It, Shadow Mario! As the title says, Shadow Mario waits for no one. Chase him YET AGAIN through the level. You'll have to climb the cliff at one point to keep up with him. Soak him, and he'll dissapear leaving a shine sprite. You only have to chase him once more after this and you'll never have to endure this tedious task again! EVER! YIPPEE! Episode 8: The Red Coin Fish Go to the top of the level again and talk to Grandpa. He says he's got a prize for you. Jump into the waterfall again and you'll get dragged underwater. There's a fish swimming about made of red and yellow coins. Ever now and then it'll spin around and the coins will shoot off in different directions. Then it'll reform into the fish pattern. Grab all 8 red coins (which will also refill your life meter, so you don't have to go away and collect coins, either) and a shine will appear. SECRET SHINES 1st secret shine: Make your way to the left of the level and climb the western cliff using the the platforms in the wall. When you're at the top, climb the tree and squirt water at the golden bird that flies around. Soak it and it'll cough up a shine. 2nd secret shine: Return to Episode 6 and enter the obstacle course. Stomp the switch and collect all 8 red coins in 1:30. Then you'll get another shine sprite. PIANTA VILLAGE In this level, you'll deal with Il Piantissimo again, a lady who's got some really wild pets and a whole inferno of goop! Episode 1: Chain Chomplets Unchained Talk to the Pianta at the start (Who is the Mayor) and he'll tell you that this woman's pets are rampaging throughout the village! There's three chain chomps around here, with lots of flaming goop. Cool one down, and grab it's tail. You need to pull back and let go and it'll bound away bouncing across the walls. You need to aim so the chain chomp will fall in the lake. Repeat this with the other two chain chomps and they'll be cooled off. A shine sprite is your reward. Episode 2: Il Piantissimo's Crazy Climb Yep, him again. This is the last time you'll race him. (Yay!) Remember, you can spray water in front of you and slide along it to build up speed. Climb the big tree at the rear of the village and touch the flag. Get the shine. Episode 3: The Goopy Inferno Whole villaged covered in flaming hot goop you say? No problem for Mario and his FLUDD! Although... as soon as you start the level, Shadow Mario steals it and throws it out of reach. You're gonna have to get it back first! Explore the village (The parts that AREN'T on fire.) and you'll see a pianta looking down a whole. Power bounce down and you'll flip a mesh gate. Climb along and punch the walls so they move. When you get to the mushrooms, you'll have to jump to get back onto another part of the mesh. After a while you'll appear back in the normal part of the level. Jump across the platforms that aren't covered in goop and get your FLUDD back. Now squirt the Mayor at the top of the yellow mushroom. Wash the goop off him and talk to him for a shine sprite. Episode 4: Chain Chomp's Bath Wow, that's one BIG chain chomp! Spray him with water to cool him down and grab his tail. Drag him around to where the spa is. If he gets angry again, spray him to cool him down. Keep dragging him until you get to the spa and guide him into the pool to cool him down. Climb onto his head and get the shine sprite. Episode 5: Secret of the Village Underside Get the Yoshi egg the fruit he wants. There's a tree in the middle of the level that grows... er, multiple fruits. Grab the one that Yoshi wants and feed him it. Drop down to the mushrooms under the level and spray juice at the orange goop. Drop down for an obstacle course with a twist... The Piantas on this level will throw you. You need to use them to get to the shine at the end. Talk to them at different points and they'll throw you. Where you land depends on where you talked to them... experiment with this, but make sure you have a lot of lives before you start. Episode 6: Piantas in Need Ten Piantas are trapped under burning goop. Find them and hose all ten of them down in the time limit for a shine sprite. Episode 7: Shadow Mario Runs Wild Again, you know what to do. Chase him down and spray water at him for a shine. And you'll NEVER have to do it again! Episode 8: Fluff Festival Coin Hunt Fluffy-puffy-fluffy. Jump on a fluff and FLLLYYY AWAAAY! Ahem. Jump on the bits of fluff to get across the level easier, and get a better view. Find all 8 red coins and use a bit of fluff to get to the shine sprite that appears. SECRET SHINES 1st secret shine: Go back to Episode 5. It's another red coin hunt. You have 1:30 to get 8 of them. Remember how you done this level before... 2nd secret shine: On episode 8, go on top of the tree. Spray the sun image until a hidden shine sprite appears. CORONA MOUNAIN Here you are! The final level! FUN FUN FUN! ...And as you'd expect, hard hard hard. Get to the end for your final battle with Bowser and son. Good luck, you'll need it. There's platforms with spikes at the start. Use your hover nozzle to get over these, and put out any fire underneath you. Soon enough, you'll encounter a beaten-up wooden boat. "Don't tell me..." Yep. You've got to use it. Aim FLUDD backwards and shoot water to go forwards. Uh, get it? Shoot right to go left, and left to go right. Do this thing SLOWLY. Don't crash, or it's all over for you. When you get far enough, grab the Jet Pack nozzle. Blast through all the clouds until you reach the top. Time to kick some scaly reptilian butt! BOWSER AND BOWSER JNR. Peach is on that inflateable rubber ducky there. Ignore Bowser Jnr, you can't hurt him. He'll fire the odd bullet bill at you, try and avoid them. Bowser will breathe fire at you, and splash about in his tub of green ooze so a wave comes at you and causes damage. Use your Rocket Nozzle to do a boost jump and then power bounce onto the four caps on each side of the giant tub. Once you've destroyed all four, CONGRATULATIONS! You've complete the game. You'll get a shine sprite, too. THE LAST SHINE SPRITES I know, you've probably got all the ones covered in this guide and are thinking "That freeloader is missing some." Well, I remembered you can get shine sprites by collecting a 100 coins on each level. So there you go, the answer to your woe. In a later version, i'll give tips how to get 100 coins in each level easier. Until then... leave me alone. -FAQ- Q: "Hey you Jerkbag, you didn't cover all of the shine sprites in the game! I followed your guide and I dont have 120!" A: That's because you get all of the other shines from collecting blue coins. Everytime you have 10, you can trade them for a shine sprite in the hut near Ricco Harbor. Q: "Where are all the blue coins?" A: I said at the start I wouldn't be covering them, only the shines. Perhaps i'll add the locations of the coins in a later version. Q: "My friend said you could play as Shadow Mario by-" A: Stop. When people say "My friend said" it's always followed by a lie. There are NO cheats for Super Mario Sunshine, not that i'm aware of. And I know almost everything in this game. Q: "Can you do the Goopy Inferno mission without getting your FLUDD back first?" A: Ha, I did try that. I was doing pretty good until I died. But you need the FLUDD to get the Mayor clean. So no, it doesn't work. Q: "Unfortunately, I suck at games and can't complete the obstacle courses. Any tips for me?" A: I can't really give very good tips here, but make sure you use every jumping technique Mario has. Once you've completed the episode with the obstacle course in though, you can use your FLUDD if you want to replay it. That makes collecting the 8 red coins a whole lot easier. Q: "You missed something in your guide." A: Email me. Q: "My friend said you could play as Luigi by-" A: Shut up. Q: "I've got 150 shines on Mario Sunshine!" A: No you 'aint. It only goes up to 120. Q: "How could you forget to put the 100 coin shine sprites there?! Are you just dumb, or what?" A: Ssshhh. I just noticed that, so i've listed them, too. Q: "Can I put your guide on my site?" A: Maybe. Email me. Q: "I'd like to print off your guide and sell it on eBay, m'kay?" A: You'd like to, but you're not going to. I'll sue the pants off you, seriously. Perhaps. Q: "Why didn't you make a walkthrough for a newer game?" A: I could have, but i'd probably mess up. I'm waiting for a game which I KNOW I can make a walkthrough for without any trouble. Q: "This guide sucks." A: It's the first one i've ever made. Q: "So? It still sucks." A: Find a hole and die in it, please. Q: "Can I use your help? I'd like to make an FAQ/Walkthrough of my own on this game, but I need some advice..." A: Depends what game it is, and obviously if I have it or not. If you're an okay guy, email me about it. -Super Mario Sunshine Secrets- Sunglasses: Get 30 shine sprites and talk to the Pianta wearing sunglasses on a level. He'll give you some sunglasses to wear. Talk to him again to take them off. Shine shirt: Complete the game. Talk to the same person. He'll give you sunglasses, but a new shirt, too. Anymore? Contact me! -Credits- Thanks to LivingNightmare185 from the GameFAQ's forum for posting some helpful links and suggesting I go ahead with this thing. Thanks to Bedman, the first GameFAQ I read was his Majora's Mask guide. It was very helpful, and persuaded me to start writing guides myself. Thanks. I know everyone said it, but you took the time to read this guide, even if it was a little crummy. Made by _Itsumademo_ 2005 End of document
