How do I input the cheats on the GameCube version of the legend of soyru a new beginning game?

How do I input the cheats on the legend of spyro a new beginning GameCube game? Do I use the control stick or the directional pad? Will these cheats only work when I start the game from the beginning on an empty save file? Or will they work on a game that has been saved, finished and started over again from the beginning using the same file that was used when I was playing the game a previous time? Someone please answer this as soon as possible, thank you so very very much
