Question for Super Smash Bros. Melee

I just got a gamecube and ssbm but I couldnt get a memory card yet, I'm going to get one soon, like within the next day or so. I've unlocked a few things and I wanna save when I get a memory card but I didnt see a manual save in the options menu. Will it save when I put one in or will I have to start over?
