Why is there 5 question marks for secret shine sprits but there only two secret shines?

Where does it show 5 question marks?
In the map screen, or the entrance to areas, it shows ???, which indicates the secret levels.
??? Doesn't mean a three-letter word, nor does it indicate the number of Shine Sprites you can get via the secret levels. It just indicates an unknown area that Mario is unfamiliar with.
