I have a Chao called crimson and it got a ball of fire instead of the yellow ball.

Hmmm. I've had that happen to my little brother's chao, he gave it alot of fire birds.

I hear ya, it happened to me too
My chao,"sniper" got a fire ball on his head when I gave him his first animal. Then I gave another chao a fish and it had a fireball.
Then you will eventually unlock hero and darkraces, on the 4th level of the hero race, the chao will also have a ball of fire.
if you gave it a half-fish(the green thing you see when you go to the black market)then that's what did it.
