Is this supposed to be hard? You can do this easy with Mario.In Challenge Mode particularly, it's easy. Just grab the Power-bat power-up, and hit the ball just right. Depending on the field, the difficulty varies. In Yoshi Park or Mario Stadium, it's easy. It's hard if you're playing Peach or Bowser.

It doesn't just matter about the angle it deals with power. Look when you see a little ring around the batter/pitcher let go of A [its ultra hard with bad batters] for example power people charge up slower and have a better chance of hitting a homer
