He can't actually inherit the farm. If you want him to become a farmer, there are a few handy guides in the walkthroughs section. Try looking there.
if you want him to be a farmer do not be freinds with murry rock cody ect. be freind with vesta marlin or celia if you married her he will most likly become a farmer or rancher.
