There are several pet possibilities. You start with the dog.
You can get a chihuahah from Carter at the dig site if you are really good friends with him.
Sometime in chapter 2 Romana will give you a cat. If you befriend Mukumuku and give it a fish, you can get a pet lizard.
Also when your goat stops giving milk it becomes just a pet.
You only get one child, always a boy, always the same physical appearance.
Your newly-bought cow is too young to give milk. Wait 30 days for it to mature fully.
If you have nothing else to do, you can always fish or dig at the excavation site. Also you can never spend too much time with your son.
Depending on what you want him to do with his life when he gets older, you can take him different places and show him things.
Also if you are really that bored you could just turn it on and walk away, though I DO NOT recommend this.
