Actually, being able to obtain raccoon is just a myth, you can't.
The only pets you can get are a dog, which you obtain at the beginning of the game, and a cat. Befriending Romana will get you the cat, but only after or during the first year of chapter 2.
You can get ducks, though I wouldn't really count it as a pet, by having a pond built in chapter 1 while raising 4 or more chickens.
But those are all the pets you can obtain.
It is true you can get pets be triggering a event.

Natsume themselves said you can only get the dog and cat. Anyone who says otherwise is lying ... prove it...show us the pictures. You can't because you can't get them. The chihuahus is the biggest lie. Again...Natsume said you couldn't get any other pets except the dog and cat. That includes the lizard, turtle, owl, raccoon and yes....the chihuahua.

Cat you befriend the old lady in the big house.
Lizard you befriend the big foot thing.

Chihuahua you can get but it's really hard. You have to have found all 6 tablets and be friends with carter and flora. Raccoon comes from vesta after you've gotten the great field and the hoe from Tim you can get the other hoe from vesta then she will give you a raccoon for all your hard work. The lizard you can get by being friends with muhamuka after seeing the cutscene the lizard shows up at your doorstep a few days later. They rreally do nothing other than lay lazily around your farm. Also there is a game glitch where you can bring your dog inside once while it's raining then it can come in anytime. If you have a toddler he will snuggle with the dog and it's super cute but he doesn't like being shown the dog
FACT: (Can definitely obtain)
Cat: Befriend Romana, she'll come to your door with a cat (in year 2 I think).
Chihuahua: Find the four stone tablets and befriend at least Carter, maybe Flora too.
Duck: Build pond in year 1, then in year 2 (around summertime) your wife will see and ask to keep them.
LEGEND: (Unsure of reality)
Lizard: Befriend Mukumuku in the first year (He likes fish).
Raccoon: Befriend Vesta and get Vesta's and Tim's hoe AND the Great Field.
Turtle from Turtle Swamp: It is rumored that you can befriend Cody to obtain the turtle. I don't know when or the details of this legend, I've just heard it's possible.

P.S. Please don't call others liars just because you didn't get these achievements yourself.
And I don't know what to say about Natsume saying you can only get dog, and cat. You CAN get the Chihuahua and Duck at least.
