If you want more space, then where there is a group of opponent cars, either at the start-line or in the middle of a race, then shove a car by bashing it.
This will cause many other cars to crash and cause carnage.
You can then head through the middle to make a quick escape and a very good chance of winning!
NOTE: This may slow you down a little, but you'r opponent(s) will go to a complete stop or turn over completely.
