Could somebody please tell me what the DEFENSE attribute actually does because as far as I can see it doesn't put up any of my aragorns or eowyns stats.

It makes you take less damage and increases your chances of blocking. Upgrade it early on alongside attack and courage and you...will...kick...ASS!
