How can I get a male Pokemon in the beginning??(like torchick)srry bout the spelling

Either it's random what sex you get or I think you have to be male to get given a male Pokemon and female to get a female pokemon.
It's random. I always get male starters except once. It has nothing to do with the trainer's gender. I never change my gender in any game and my starters have always come up different no matter what. Like in fire red, I got a female yet in sapphire I got a male three times and a female once.
First of all, I can't believe that your starters ae FEMALE! Well, you have 87.5% of getting a male starter.
Hehehe, first time I started Emerald, I got a female torchic, and she's still with me 4 years later...hehehe, But you can turn your game off then back on until you get the starter of your preferred gender.
