Question for Pokemon Sapphire

We bought it the package said for the gba only. and we go upstairs and go to the booth that says trade with a friend or something like that, I don't have it in front of me. When we traded with Pokemon silver the cord worked then I mean silver to gold. So I know that the cord works. We even used different gba's and they still won't let us trade. Did we miss something? Do we have to go further into the game? When is the first time that we are supposed to be able to trade on sapphire and ruby?

The first time is once in the beinging and you have battled May and already talked to Prof. Birch twice.

You cannot use the same cord to trade between Game Boy Color games to trade between GBA games....

Ok first off why do you ask so many questions on these games. Gold, silver, ruby, sapphire, just mkae up your mind. And second, this is not an instant message chat board. Repeat, NOT A CHAT BOARD.
