THAT'S NOT TRUE! I know, I have a copper card and beat the battle tower 100 times and all I got was a gold shield and my card was still copper. Your card does not upgraded. Don't worry, I got fooled to.

You need to do more things involving a game link cable and a friend with a gameboy and pokemon sapphire/ruby. Having link battles is the best.
