If you have a pokemon's friend area*, just repeatedly fight Pokemon of that species and eventually you will recruit one.
*to get friend areas, do missions with friend area rewards** and buy from wigglytuff. Unfortunately a lot of friend areas are only buyable after you beat rayquaza and the credits roll, so until then other than the aforementioned ways, there is only the ones that you get for your starter and partner, power plant, mistrise forest, and some other one you get once you beat thunderwave cave. Lastly, the ones that you get with missions**, you can do the missions early once you have unlocked the right dungeons, with wonder mail. For wonder mail stuff look at FAQs and someone has a huge wonder mail guide.

Good luck recruiting! I have tons of members, including moltres and zapdos and articuno (sorry, beat the game first for those) and charizard and croconaw (likewise to evolve :-( )
