This may sound dumb, but I don't know where poliwhirl is. And where is magmar and how rare is it?

You can find Poliwhirl with the Super Rod in Route 24, 25, 6, 22, and 23, and also in Viridian City.
Magmar is impossible to obtain in Fire Red, only in Leaf Green, and its rare in Mt. Ember as well as the Pokemon Mansion.

Poliwhirl can be found in:
Two Island
Four Island
Six Island
and the Cerulean Cave
Magmar can be found in:
(only leaf green) One Island Mt.Ember cave
As for rarity I would say uncommon.

Poliwhirl can just be evolved from Poliwag, who is found near the Indigo Plateu.
Magmar is ot in this game, only in LeafGreen.
He is found in the mansion on that game.
