I would say train them about 5 levels higher then the gym leaders pokemon.

First save your game before you battle the gym.
After that go battle the trainers inside and then save your game after you beat all of them execpt the gym leader.
Now battle the gym trainer and see what type of Pokemon does he/she have,what level are they and what attacks do they have.
Always include one Pokemon that is a stronger type than the gym leader
For example: fire is weak against water and rock.
