Once you've dived in the abandoned ship and got the scanner, talk to the prof on the ship and he'll say give it to capt. Stern.
Once you've given it to him he will ask to give you either the deepseatooth or deepseascale.

You go to Dewford, surf east, and there will be a abanded boat there you get a scanner take it to Slateport give it to the Caption, and he will give you ethier a choice of the DeepSeaTooth or the DeepSeaScale.
