Hmm...

I'm unsure what you're using for inputting/enabling cheats (if it's through emu or action replay system itself).

I primarily use my boy emulator though...

In the case of my boy (and most likely with other emu or AR system itself):

- Make sure you know know the code's "cheat type".... GameShark v3 (Action Replay), codebreaker, etc first. Some cheat menus are not set on automatic search (like the gba emu I use) and you may have to also input cheat type manually in some cases.

- Safest to stick with GameShark/Action Replay cheats in gba tbh. I've had some rather unpleasant experiences when involving codebreaker ones.

- if you're inputting the cheat code itself via emulator cheat menu or an online cheat function, I Highly Recommend using copy/paste function with coding (especially with the more lengthy ones). Just having 1 digit missing or being wrong can often cause the problem you're having. Also, if it doesn't end up crashing you game instead.

* When inputting cheats:
(in most cases)

1) Input cheat name. This normally doesn't have to be exact, it's more of a reference for yourself.

2) Select cheat type. It's usually appears on a roster list once when you select it.
- Otherwise........

3) Copy/Paste full cheat code into cheat code section (if able), then select the option that implies "search" for cheat type. If that option isn't there, then input cheat type (if you don't have a pull down listing to choose from). Make sure it's exact.

I hope this helps.
