To get the fishing rod , you first when you start a new game . The merchand Won will visit you , telling you that he has opened a shop on the beach . This will happen the 2nd or 3rd day . Right after it happen , the next day /or same day , go to the beach . You will find his shop just right next to the boat . Around 11 am it is open , go in and you will get an 'event' with Zack and he will ask you if you want his fishing road . Oh and make sure you have enough space in your TOOLS side (not the side where you put stuff like flowers or ore) . Hope this help .
