Simple, every day give him gold or if you feel too lazy to go all the way to the mines just give him one of the grasses by the beach (it will take a bit longer though) and if you want to speed up the friendship levels you can go to confession at the church (left door on mon,wed, and rainy days from 1pm-3:50pm)
