How do you get the support option between two characters to come up when in a battle?

What you do is check their elemental affinity.

Most of the times, you'll want to keep everyone in a group so you know when a support option appears. This is the best way to get the supports and the bonuses they give the character.

If a character is within 3 spaces of another character that they have shared a conversation with, they will get combat bonuses.

Go to support menu when you're picking units and handing out weapons. That'll tell you who can talk to who, keep them together for a while and they'll talk to each other.
