Okay, now if you look beyond the big picture, of which starter will get you through the game the easiest, by looking at which starter can be the most useful, charmander easily gets that from stats. Blastoise's special attack, and attack are crappy. ALL of venusaurs stats are crappy, while charizard has great sweeping potential.

Venusaur is a good annoyer although. Blastoise is a nice tank. Charizard is a sweeper.

Now I started off with charmander becuase I looked at the big picture, what the pokemon's stats are.

Yeah, maybe Venusaur will make brock and misty a breeze to get by. Squirtle will wipe the floor with Brock, and have some trouble against Misty, and do ALRIGHT against others. Now if someone could get a hiddenpower-electric onto a Charizard, it would own Venusaur and Blastoise with ease.
