If you choose Bulbasaur as your starter i suggest this team (you don't have to use the movesets)...

1. Venusaur (grass/poison)
- Earthquake
- Frenzy Plant
- Sludge Bomb
- Double-edge

2. Lapras (water/ice)
- Ice Beam
- Surf
- Psychic
- Thunder/thunderbolt (it can learn them!)

3. Arcanine (fire)
- Flamethrower
- Fire Blast
- ExtremeSpeed
- ? (I have bite at the moment but am hoping to replace it)

4. Jolteon (electric)
- Thunderbolt
- Shock Wave/Thunder (If you want a sure hit go for shock wave, if you want power, thunder)
- Take Down
- Dig

5. Tyrannitar (dark/ground)
- Rock Throw/Tomb/Slide
- Earthquake
- Crunch
- Dig?

6. Aerodactyl (rock/flying) - it has less weaknesses
- Roost/Featherdance/(stat enhancing move)
- Earthquake
- Aerial Ace
- Fly

Blastoise- Solid choice, always performs well for me

Snorlax- I know there are only two in the game, but honestly it's worth it, it's so much better than any other normal type with that crazy HP combined with Rest, Yawn and Snore it's unbeatable

Jolteon- Teach it Shock Wave and you can make the high speed work for you, a great Pokemon all-in-all

Arcanine- Incredible stats across the board, wait til Lvl 49 to use the Fire Stone though

Vileplume- Giga Drain lets it recover all of it's health back no matter what, and the status powders are really useful

Dragonite- Honestly I use it as kind of an HM slave, I gave it Outrage, Cut, Fly, and Strength because the power makes up for it, Outrage is really powerful and it learns like every HM (I gave Surf to Blastoise)

This is my team after defeating the pokemon league once,
Arcanine (flamethrower, extremespeed, bite, fire blast) lvl 62

Mewtwo (swift, safequard, psychic, recover) lvl 72 i'm going to give him some new attacks, not sure yet

Electabuzz (swift, brick break, thunderbolt, thunder) lvl 63

Suicune (bubbelbeam, rain dance, gust, aurora beam) lvl 55 i'm lvling him up too lvl 62 to see if he's better than my golduck (surf, ice beam, hydropump, confusion) lvl 62

Tyranitar (crunch, rock slide, earthquake, thrash) lvl 55

Dratini not worth to mention still training him to lvl50 before i let him evolve to get the good attacks early. I'm lvling him with exp. share

I started with charmander, but i rather have growlithe, before mewtwo i had kadabra, forget about what others say, he's strong enough for the elite four, even if you couldn't evolve him. I also replaced my nidoking and graveler AFTER the elite four (this was my team then: arcanine, electrabuzz, kadabra, golduck, nidoking, graveler)

Arcanine - Instead of Charizard, because of better stats
Lapras - op water/ice pokemon thanks to Ice Beam + high defence stats
Snorlax - cool move set, and high defence and health
Scizor - High speed and attack stats
Alakazam - op shiet
Dragonite - casue dragonite is awesome

This team has almost always worked for me:
-Blastoise, solid water type because oter strong water types (to me) are few and far between

-Arcanine, covers the bases for your foe's starter

-Pikachu/Raichu, to take care of your foe's Pidgeot & Gyarados

-Nidoking, very good move pool and it can compensate for its weakness to water by learning thunderbolt

-Dragonite, for obvious reasons

-Any Psychic type or ice type

Hope This Helps!

I like the way you guys think but the best team is obvious.
At first you need
- electrode. This because he can learn a trick that he is imume for explosions. So when he does selfdestruct, he survive it.
At second you need
- butterfree, it can learn many usefull attacks. With this attacks you can make several tactics. You could put the pokemon a sleep and learn it very powerfull attacks as solarbeam and other attacks
at third a good pokemon is
- Polywrath, this pokemon is both water and fight. Water is usefull because you need a pokemon who can learn surf. Also when polywag evoluves in polywirl, you can directly evolve it into polywrath so each level it goes up, het get very much stats extra. Het also can learn good fightmoves and is resistend to many types.
The fourth pokemon is
- Clafable, this pokemon got high hp and very, very usefull attacks. Choose the right attacks and it's almost unbeatable. But find that out by yourself :p
Only two pokemons left for the ultimate team, number 5 is
- Xato, this is not the most powerfull pokemon, but it is a pokemon who can learn the best moves. It does also learn the most moves just by leveling and further is way more powerfull at high levels than other pokemons. It is also not hard to train this pokemon so it is easy to make this pokemon a champion
The last pokemon of the ultimat deck is definatly:
- piloswine, it is the most strongest icepokemon. Only beatable by firepokemons, but further could he learn icebeam and other iceattacks. It also got high stats and is to me a good number six.

This was my team, I hope you guys enjoin it. It maybe sounds a little bit unrealistic, but this team is defenitly the strongest in the hands of a good pokemontrainer.

PS.
Sorry for the languages, not English/American.
Goodluck further!

This is my party for now,

Blastoise/Lapras - earthquake, ice beam, surf and bite/body slam

Zapdos - Thundershock (i think thats the one with 90 damage), Drill peck, Fly and Ariel ace

Arcanine - Bite/Crunch, Flamethrower, Strength and one of your choice

Meothe - My HM slave ;)

Mewtwo/Kadabra - Phychic is the only move i really use, Calm Mind would be pretty decent too i guess

Blissey - Softboiled (as a must), Phychic (to fend off fighting types), Toxic and Flamerthrower (for the Steels which wont be poisoned)

Tips on my choices are appreciated

A good, solid team does not have to include ubers and legendary Pokemon, though many like to because of their strength.
I think a good team would be:
Charizard
(A good starter, strong fire type. Also grants you a flying type.)
Raichu
(Fast, good electric type available early in the game as a Pikachu.)
Vileplume
(Good grass/poison type, underrated but not bad choice for a grass type.)
Nidoking
(An offensive, strong Pokemon that can cover its weaknesses. It can learn Thunderbolt to deal with water types. Also available fairly early in the game.)
Lapras
(Good HP, can tank. Good water type. What more do I need to say?)
Dragonite/Your choice
(Dragonite is, before the E4, the only dragon type apart from its evolutions. I know with Charizard you already have one flying member on your team, but Dragonite totally covers its weaknesses and, although a pain to train, is a really good Pokemon. Of course, if you'd prefer not to have a Dragonite, due to the effort to obtain it, a Pokemon of your choice could go here.)

I know this is not the BEST team but it is a good one, and one I've used before and have had no troubles with.

I have to agree raichu is known for its speed correct? well if you want a speedy electric and one with better special attack get jolteon. and pidgeot sucks it has weak attack power and you need high attack when it comes to bird types get either dodrio or fearow. or the legendary birds of course. and i dont see any point in getting a grass type if you have a water and electric since they cover the types grass is good against and a psychic type is very important because there are so many poison pokemon in fire red

Raichu is useless, pidgeot too, all starter pokemons can be replaced by better ones.
I'm still trying to find the perfect team, since I can't trade with other games my current one is :
- Moltres (way better than charizard and of the same type) with any spe attack bonus nature
- Exeggutor (the best spe attack of plant pokemon) with any spe attack bonus nature (he is psych too, it can be handy since I don't pick Mewtwo)
- Magneton (best spe attack of thunder type pokemon, better than zapdos) with any spe attack bonus nature. And Steel type is strong !
- Dragonite obviously ^^ , with any attack OR spe attack bonus nature, except for those who minimize the other one (I want full dmg). Dragonite can learn so many useful TMs, spe attack is useful on him anyway.
- Tyranitar, the "brainless warrior" of the party, with any attack bonus nature
- Kingler, give him a hyperbeam and he shines very well, any attack bonus nature will do the trick.

I'm counting on one or two-shots kills with this team, and it works till now. I'm disappointed by the lack of good water pokemon in the fire red / leaf green versions, I usually love them.

And since moves are on the subject, I equip moves like thunderbolt, ice beam, flamethrower, earthquake, fly, surf, hyper beam, psychic.
The goal is : not being limited by PP and still doing dmg (and potential side effects like burn..).

Not a bad team, I like that you didn't add any legendaries. I feel that legendary Pokemon just take the fun out of the game. Not by catching them but by using them. It's not as challenging. My favorite team to date is Charizard, Rhydon, Cloyster, Jolteon, Hitmonlee and Exeggutor. I am aware that it might not be the best but it has always worked out for me without fail.

Please note that this comment will pick flaws in this suggestion. It will also try to give advice on how to improve it. I am not trying to be mean or make the the creator of the suggestion look stupid i just need to point out the problems so people will not blindly follow this advice.

There are plenty of better teams on the game. When you have acess to pokemon not in the original 151 pokemon you can make a team massivly more powerful than that. Even without acess to pokemon other than the 151 you can make a team better than that.

Now i cannot see massive problems with the types of pokemon used or flaws with that. You seem to have a team void of problems with certain types.

Charizard - Good choice. But what nature? What moves? You will find that picking certain natures and certain moves based on the strenghs and weaknesses of your other pokemon will improve your team ten fold. - same coments for all pokemon until riachu.

Riachu - A little uncreative and unoriginal isnt it? There are better pokemon that riachu.

You can get steel electric pokemon that can overcome that weakness to rock and dish out more damage aswell as beeing able to dispose of a dangerous enemy to steel - water. What about water electric pokemon? Riachu is a little... uncreative isnt it? There are better choices.

Pidgeot - seriously? Best you can come up with? There are better bird pokemon that pidgeot!
