Introduction HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Hello, good evening, and welcome to FAQNinja/Ian Ganpet/Inhuman Q's game-guide for the GameBoy game "Penta Dragon". This game wasn't released outside of Japan, so all text in this game is in Japanese. Thus, you can imagine how hard it would be to fully understand the plot, or even how the game plays. I wanted to use this FAQ to preserve this unusual gem of a game so people will know what it's all about, and possibly take intrest in buying it. There was no FAQ/Walkthrough on the site when I bought this game, so I had to take my chances in hopes that I'd like it. And I do, so I've decided to write a guide to it. This is my first FAQ/Walkthrough, so it was a bit of a risk writing for a game released outside my language. Nonetheless, I remain confident that this will be of some help to you, and I am ready to share whatever small bit of info I may have on Penta Dragon. If you want to scroll down to a section, look for the line of H's. This indicates the start of a section. If you have any questions regarding the game or this walkthrough, email me at [email protected]. Now without further ado, here it is... HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH 2. Storyline HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH The cutscene at the beginning of the game is in Japanese so I'll just piece together what I can. You are in control of a dragon girl named Sara. And that, my friend, is the only thing that's varifyable. The cutscene involves a wall of scrolling text followed by a text box and a picture of some sort of book. Then it cuts to an image of Sara. The next picture is of what I only assume is an egg of some sort lying at the bottom of a well (without color it's a little hard to tell). So my rendition of the plot is that the baddies have stolen a magical spell book that holds the key to world domination and Sara, a girl dragon that hatched from an abandoned egg must track them down and retrieve the book. If anyone has any official info on the plot feel free to mail it to me and I'll give you credit. HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH 3. Gameplay basics HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH This game plays from birds-eye view and is a shoot-em-up style. You can move in 8 directions using the control pad, and the "A" button fires. "Select" pauses the game and brings up the inventory. Whenever you collect an item, it goes into your inventory. There are 3 subscreens in the inventory: Medical, Protect, and Special. Potions to refill your health go into Medical, and you can press "A" to use them. Pressing down will bring you to Special. In Special, you can use an item by pressing "A". If you press down again you'll come to Protect, and the items that go here can be used to temporarily aid your defence. You kill your enemies by shooting fireballs at them. "A" shoots your standard shot. If you grab an Attack Item (A black square with any number of arrows on it), your attack type will change. Once I put the Item List in there will be a hopefully full chart of which item is linked to which attack pattern. There is one thing that I find a little odd about this game. Like most games, this has mini-bosses that you have to defeat to advance. In most games, they will pop up once you get to a certain part of the stage, and they'll be blocking the way. In Penta Dragon the bosses appear not at a certain point in the level, but in a certain point at time. No matter where you are in the room, once the game timer hits 0, the screen will flash, all enemies will vanish, the music will change, and a large foe will appear. Usually the bosses come in shifts. You will fight one type of boss and once you beat it, the enemies will re-appear and the stage will go on as normal. Then, a set time later, a different boss will come at you and you'll have to fry it. After that you'll have to fight the first boss again, then the second etc. If you kill a certain amount of enemies you'll transform into your dragon mode. Your dragon form can shoot fireballs from her mouth, and makes boss battles a breeze (especially the mini-bosses). After a while you'll morph back. HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH 4. Walkthrough HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHStage 1HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH You start in a small room surrounded by enemies, with 3 potions on your right. Kill or run past the enemies into the next room. Keep on running forward until you come to a room with a Normal Attack and a Rapid Fire. Get the Rapid Fire, since it just plain rules. Now just head forward until you come to a row of thorny poles rotating out of the wall. Be careful as you sneak through the gaps, making sure not to touch the sides. DO NOT try to cross whilst fighting a mini-boss, for this will be the death of you. Make sure that you kill the boss shortly before attempting to cross this area. Once through, head north and you'll find an extra life. You'd have to be stupid not to get it. In this game, one death means GAME OVER, so give yourself this rare chance to continue. Then head straight into the next room. Sadly, you'll have to part with your Rapid Fire. By this point you will surely have fought either one of or both mini-bosses, so here are their descriptions and the stradegies used to defeat them. I made the mini-boss names up since their actual names haven't popped up in the game yet. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ MINI-BOSS: Haunt Dragon This guy moves up and down as you do. He moves from left to right and will, in turn, fire three shots at you. You can choose to dodge if you want, but I don't personally see this guy as any threat. Either make sure to dodge or just stant still and fire at him until he's dead. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ MINI-BOSS: The Arachnid A spider that follows you around. In its routine it'll shoot a bullet in all 8 directions. These shots arn't a problem. What you have to watch out for is that you don't keep coliding with the boss itself, for this'll chip away your health at a fast rate. He takes more shots to kill than Haunt Dragon. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I'll be as direct as I can for getting through the nextt room. At the start, go up, dodging the giant nail prodding you from the wall. Collect any items you see fit on the way. When the option arises, go right. Then keep going right until you can go down. Walk down past the thorny drills, which are oddly placed further apart than the drills in the first room. In most games these days, the challenges tend to become MORE complex as you advance, but hey? After that, its just a matter of walking down past a group of prodding nails. At the bottom, go left. Now you must treck up over a groovy-slash-dizzying floor. Past the floor, all you have to do is sneak past more thorn drills and you're in the next room. TO BE CONTINUED........... HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH 5. Licence HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I shouldn't have to even say that I don't own this game (the rights, that is. If I didn't own a COPY of the game then how could I be doing a walkthrough?)
