01 - INTRODUCTION

Kirby's Pinball Land was released for the original Game Boy in 1993. It is, in
my opinion, the best pinball game for the original Game Boy. It has the
advantage over traditional pinball simulations of not having a camera which
constantly scrolls up and down following the ball. All of the action takes
place in an area (stage) that perfectly fits the screen. The camera need only
scroll between the stages when the player has satisfied the criteria to move
on to the next stage, bonus stage, boss stage, or where Kirby slips down to
the stage below.

The same company made Revenge of the 'Gator in 1990. That was another pinball
game set across different playing areas, and for which I have previously posted
a FAQ here on GameFaqs. Some ideas in Kirby's Pinball Land are clearly borrowed
from the earlier game.

I am not a big fan of Kirby games in general, but I'm sure that I'm not the
only person who loves this game who has failed to delve more deeply into the
whole Kirby experience. This may put me at a slight disadvantage when
describing the various enemies, as they and Kirby probably have some sort of
history, of which I am largely ignorant. But looking at it the other way, I can
at least describe what I see without assuming any prior knowledge on the part
of the reader. For anyone seeped in Kirby folklore I shall give the names of
characters and objects where they are known to me from the manual.

The game is set across three Pinball Lands. Each Land has three stages, a bonus
stage, and a boss stage. When any one Land is successfully negotiated it will
lead to a showdown with its boss. Beat all three bosses and you get to take on
King Dedede. Beat him and you beat the game. It's a sort of quest with Kirby in
the guise of a pinball.

The stages in all three Pinball Lands are set out in a similar way. From the
Warp Screen you will start at one of the middle stages. From the middle stages
it is possible to get to the bonus games. Above the middle stages there are the
top stages from where it is possible to move on to the bosses. Below the middle
stage there is the bottom stage. From there it is possible to get back to the
Warp Screen and from there to the middle stage of any of the Pinball Lands.
Below the bottom stage there is a springboard where you get the chance to save
your current Kirby.

The game is nicely balanced as you will feel that beating the game is always a
possibility. Actually beating the game is quite difficult, and most of the
time, if you're anything like me, you will fail. But you will have a lot of fun
along the way.

There are points to be had, and a high score table on which to record them, but
progressing through the Lands is the real point here. It is possible to get a
higher score in a game where you fail to beat King Dedede. Your top four scores
are recorded. I shan't say too much about points in what follows. If you hit
stuff you will score points. This guide concentrates on the completion of the
game by getting through the stages and finally defeating King Dedede.

I still have my original copy of the instruction booklet (DMG-K9). You can
download a pdf copy of the American version (DMG-K9-USA) from
replacementdocs.com. I would recommend checking out this site if you've not
seen it before.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

03 - IN GAME DATA

The current SCORE is given at the bottom left of the screen. You are treated to
a special Kirby dance for every 500,000 points.

The BONUS SCORE and MULTIPLIER is given at the bottom right of the screen.

The KIRBYS remaining is given at the top left of the screen. You start the game
with three.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

04 - WARP SCREEN

You start a new game here. The three Pinball Lands are are set out, with a set
of flippers beneath, and a cannon between the flippers. Each Land has its own
warp star. You can use the flippers to hit a warp star to go to that Land.
Alternatively, you could let Kirby drop into the cannon. The cannon will then
point at each star in turn. Use Button A to fire Kirby at the warp star of your
choice. When using your first Kirby it doesnt matter which star you hit, unless
you have a preference for the order in which you tackle the Lands. Personally,
I don't think there's much in it. If you're treating the game as a quest then
you will have to beat every boss in any case.

The Lands are, from left to right, WISPY-WOODS, KRACKO and POPPY BROTHERS. You
will warp to the middle stage of the Land selected.

The warp stars show letters cycling through E-X-T-R-A when the boss of the
corresponding Pinball Land has been beaten. When you hit a warp star the letter
showing at the time will be displayed in its position just above the flippers.
As you can return to the Warp Screen by satisfying certain conditions on the
bottom table of each land, it is possible to get all the letters and thereby
earn an extra Kirby.

You will also return to this screen when you beat a Pinball Land's boss. You
will not be able to get back to a Land where you have already beaten the boss.

From the Warp Screen you will always start a new Land from its middle stage.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

05 - SPRINGBOARD

The springboard occupies its own screen beneath the flippers of the bottom
stage in any of the three Pinball Lands.

By pressing Button A when the springboard is at its lowest point you can shoot
Kirby back into play. But each time Kirby lands on the springboard its power is
diminished. It starts off large and grows smaller each time you use it.

If you get your timing just right you may even relaunch Kirby all the way up
to the top stage.

The springboard resets to its original large size with each new Kirby.

A new Kirby starts from this screen.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

06 - WISPY-WOODS LAND

You will start in the middle stage when selecting this land from the Warp
Screen.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BOTTOM STAGE
Your main objective here is to hit the Kaboos to reveal the roulette hole, and
so move up to the middle stage.

KABOOS / ROULETTE HOLE
To me Kaboos look like Easter Island statues. There are three to the upper
left, three to the upper right, and one in the centre of the screen. Hit those
to the left and right to clear them. The centre Kaboo will then disappear
revealing a roulette hole. Hit Button A when the arrow is pointing straight up
to go to the middle stage.

MUMMY BALL / WARP STAR
The Mummy Ball is a ball wrapped in bandages. Every time you hit it with Kirby
you light a letter to spell W-A-R-P S-T-A-R. Hit the warp star to go to the
Warp Screen.

ROLL OVER KIRBYS / STOPPERS
Three Kirby roll over switches are located just above the flippers. They cycle
through deflated, semi-inflated, and inflated Kirbys, and so on. Each time
Kirby rolls over any one of them they change. Get three inflated Kirbys and
the stopper will appear. Get three deflated Kirbys and they disappear.

OUTLANE STOPPERS
All screens apart from the bonus and boss stages throughout the three Pinball
Lands have outlane stoppers which are activated by the roll over switches in
the lanes between the outlanes and the slingbacks.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MIDDLE STAGE / BONUS GAME
Your main objective here is to get three Kirbys on the slot machine, and to
then get the big Kirby to catch the kirby ball, and to send it to the top
stage.

DANCING KIRBY / SLOT MACHINE
The big Kirby at the top centre controls the slot machine in the centre of the
screen. Each of the three reels lights in turn. Hit the big Kirby to spin the
lit reel. Alternatively, send the Kirby ball over the big Kirby to spin all of
the reels.

SLOT MACHINE
3x Kirbys will allow the big Kirby to catch the Kirby ball and send it up to
the top stage. If the Kirby ball is travelling too fast this will not happen.
3x warp stars will send a warp star across the screen. Hit it to go to the
bonus game.
3x Maxim Tomatoes will send an MT, dragged by a flying saucer, across the
screen. Hit it to activate the stopper.
3x One-Eyed Monsters will remove the stopper.

HOLES
There are holes to the upper left and right from which flying saucers appear.
Hit them for points before they disappear down the opposite hole. If you hit
Kirby into one of the holes he will emerge from the other, sometimes hitting
items as he does so.

BONUS GAME
An Arkanoid style game with three rows of bricks. Hit the bricks until a gap
appears. The little character walking back and forth above the bricks will
then drop through. Hit him for points. The missing bricks will reappear. Repeat
with the next character. After you have hit the second character, a 1 Up
appears above the bricks.

You only have a limited amount of time, and I believe you would have to be
exceptionally lucky or skillful to get the 1 Up. The bonus games add bonuses
and multipliers. When you see +B the bonus is added to. When you see +M the
multiplier is added to. From the bonus game you will warp to the top stage of
this Land.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TOP STAGE
Your objective here is to hit the cappies to make the warp star appear, then
hit the star to go to the boss stage for this Land.

CAPPIES / WARP STAR
Three cappies (mushrooms) must be destroyed to make the warp star appear. Hit
them once to remove their caps, and again to make them disappear altogether.
They will reappear if you take too long getting rid of all three.

WARP STAR
The warp star appears on a shelf above the cappies. You will need to angle your
shot around the curvature of the walls to get at the star. There are a couple
of characters climbing up and down the walls which tend to get in the way
making it harder to get at the star. When you do get it you will warp to the
boss stage.

MAXIM TOMATO / STOPPER
MT's are always associated with stoppers in this game. In this stage they
appear on the shelf from time to time.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BOSS STAGE

Wispy-Woods is a big tree with a face. Wispy-Woods will drop apples which may
stun one or both of your flippers momentarily. The apples will also deflect
your attempts to hit him. Keep hitting him until he is defeated. He will drop
a key. Hit the key to send your Kirby back to the Warp Screen.

If Kirby drops through the flippers he will warp back to the top stage. If you
fail to collect the key in any of the boss stages after it appears you will
find it waiting for you when you return to the boss stage. You won't have to
beat the boss again.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

07 - KRACKO

You will start in the middle stage when selecting this land from the Warp
Screen.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BOTTOM STAGE
Your main objective in this stage is hit Scarfy (pig) to enable you to get to
the middle stage.

SCARFY
Keep hitting Scarfy until you have lit the letters S-C-A-R-F-Y. He will split
into three scarfys arranged in a triangle with two below and one above. Hit the
higher scarfy with Kirby. This scarfy will then transform into Kirby. The other
two scarfys will then come together to send Kirby to the middle stage. If you
hit either of the two lower scarfys, then the one to its side and the one above
will come together to push Kirby onto the nearest slingshot.

BUMPIN' BOOS / WARP STAR
Hit the bumpin' boos (ghosts) to light W-A-R-P S-T-A-R. The one to the top left
lights W-A-R-P, and the one to the top right lights S-T-A-R. Hit the star to
ride it to the Warp Screen.

ROLL OVER KIRBYS / STOPPER
Three Kirby roll over switches are located just above the flippers. They cycle
through deflated, semi-inflated, and inflated Kirbys, and so on. Each time
Kirby rolls over a switch it changes. Get three inflated Kirbys and the stopper
between the flippers appears. Get three deflated Kirbys and it disappears.

OUTLANE STOPPERS
All screens apart from bonus and boss stages throughout the three Pinball Lands
have outlane stoppers which are activated by the roll over switches in the
lanes between the outlanes and the slingbacks.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MIDDLE STAGE / BONUS GAME
The main objective here is to hit the Nimbus (cloud) which moves back and forth
across the top of the screen.

NIMBUS
Hit this cloud three times and it will stop above the big Kirby in the centre
of the screen and start raining on him. The big Kirby will raise an umbrella.
Get the Kirby ball to land on top of the umbrella. The big Kirby will push your
Kirby ball up to the top stage.

DARK CLOUDS
There are two rain clouds either side of the big Kirby. When hit they release
items which make their way across the screen to the other cloud. Hit these
items to score points or raise stoppers (Maxim Tomato). You may even see a warp
star to take you to the bonus game. Very rarely you will see a 1 Up here as
well.

BONUS GAME
Kirby is standing at the top of the screen. Hit the various items that move
from right to left below him. Kirby will grab them for points. The bonus games
add bonuses and multipliers. When you see +B the bonus is added to. When you
see +M the multiplier is added to. From the bonus game you will warp to the
top stage of this Land.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TOP STAGE

MR BRIGHT / MR SHINE / WARP STAR
The objective here is to hit Mr Bright (the Sun) as he scuttles back and forth
behind the protection of shifting clouds. Once dispatched you will have to do
the same with Mr Shine (the Moon) who is hiding behind stars. The stars shatter
as you hit them. Get rid of Mr Shine and a warp star appears. Hit it as it
shoots across the screen for a short time. Catch it and you warp to the boss
stage. Miss it and you start back with Mr Bright.

STOPPER / MAXIM TOMATO
Chucky hops about just above the flippers. Hit him three times and he
transforms into a Maxim Tomato. Hit the MT and the stopper appears.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BOSS STAGE

Krako starts out as a mechanical circular flying machine. After you hit him a
few times he changes into a cloud. In this form he will concentrate a bolt of
lightning on one of your flippers to immobilise it. He will also send out bats
to deflect your attempts to hit him. Keep at it and he will eventually give
up the key.

If Kirby drops through the flippers he will warp back to the top stage.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

08 - POPPY BROTHERS

You will start in the middle stage when selecting this land from the Warp
Screen.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BOTTOM STAGE
The main objective here is keep hitting Mister Frosty, but consider the
alternative presented by Chilly.

MISTER FROSTY
Mister Frosty is the walrus in the centre of the screen. Keep hitting him until
you have lit F-R-O-S-T-Y. He will catch the ball the next time it comes to him
and spin. Hit Button A and he will release the ball in the direction he is
facing. This is similar to the roulette wheel in the bottom stage of the
Wispy-Woods level. But here the outcome is less certain. He spins a lot quicker
than the roulette wheel. You will have to take extra care that he doesn't throw
Kirby straight between the flippers.

CHILLY / WARP STAR
Keep hitting Chilly (the snowman) at the top of the screen to light W-A-R-P
S-T-A-R. Ride the star to the Warp Screen. In some ways this may be the
preferable way out. From the Warp Screen you can always return to the middle
stage of this land, and you may even add to E-X-T-R-A when there if you have
defeated one or two bosses previously. The trouble is getting past Mr Frosty
to hit Chilly. Then again, your timing with a spinning Mr Frosty may be better
than mine.

ROLL OVER KIRBYS / STOPPER
Three Kirby roll over switches are located just above the flippers. They cycle
through deflated, semi-inflated, and inflated Kirbys, and so on. Each time
Kirby rolls over a switch it changes. Get three inflated Kirbys and the stopper
between the flippers appears. Get three deflated Kirbys and it disappears.

OUTLANE STOPPERS
All screens apart from bonus and boss stages throughout the three Pinball Lands
have outlane stoppers which are activated by the roll over switches in the
lanes between the outlanes and the slingbacks.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MIDDLE STAGE / BONUS GAME
The main objective here is to hit a squishy squid.

STUFFED KIRBY / HUNGRY KIRBY
To the upper left and right there are two big Kirbys. The one on the left is
Stuffed Kirby. Hit him and he spits out the item he is thinking about (there's
a thought bubble with a picture of the item). The item lands in the dish at
the centre of the screen. Hit Hungry Kirby on the right and he will suck it in.
Hit the item whilst it is still in the dish to score points, get the stopper,
warp to the bonus game or go to the top stage. Clearly, if there is an item in
the dish that you want you will need to avoid hitting Hungry Kirby.

ITEMS
Hit the Maxim Tomato for the stopper. Hit the star to warp to go to the bonus
game. Hit the Gordo (indestructible spikey item) for points. You will have to
hit Hungry Kirby to get it out of the way in the hope of getting a more useful
item next time. Hit apples for points. Hit the squishy squid and it will throw
Kirby up to the top stage. Clearly squishy squids and warp stars are the two
to go for here.

POPPY BROTHERS
Between the flippers and the dish there are two holes from which the Poppy
Brothers emerge. They will lay down bombs to make life difficult. The bombs
will explode when Kirby hits them.

BONUS GAME
This is a penalty shoot out with two balls and a squid in goal. Try to score
as many goals as you can before the timer runs out. The bonus games add bonuses
and multipliers. When you see +B the bonus is added to. When you see +M the
multiplier is added to. From the bonus game you will warp to the top stage of
this Land.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TOP STAGE

EGGS / WARP STAR
There are three doors at the top of the screen. Below them there are three
eggs. Break the eggs to release the chicks before the Junior Poppy Brothers
can get to them to make them whole again. If you hit one of the Poppy Brothers
he will retreat back through the door. You will have bought yourself some time
to concentrate on the eggs. When the last chick has been released it will go
through the door above it. All three chicks will emerge carrying items. Try to
hit the one carrying the warp star. Do so and you will warp to the boss stage.

CLUCKY / STOPPER
Hit Clucky (a chicken) three times and she turns into a Maxim Tomato. Hit it
for the stopper.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BOSS STAGE

One of the Poppy Brothers moves back and forth between two mini-platforms at
the top of the screen. Keep hitting him with Kirby and he will eventually split
into two. Now you have to hit both Poppy Brothers several times to make them
disappear and give up the key. To make things difficult they will throw bombs
to immobilise one or both of your flippers. The screen is a wrap around, so
hitting Kirby off screen to the left will see him emerge immediately on the
right, and vice versa.

If Kirby drops through the flippers he will warp back to the top stage.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

KING DEDEDE

King Dedede appears like a champion boxer in silhouette with his own music with
the spot light on him. He will throw bombs initially.

The lights come on and he undergoes a costume change. He is now clearly
standing in a boxing ring. King Dedede shoots lightning at the flippers -
sometimes both flippers at the same time. A bit unfair.

As with the other bosses if you keep hitting him he will eventually be
defeated.

If you are down to your last Kirby when facing King Dedede you may be out of
luck. It is quite easy to lose Kirby between the flippers. There is a
springboard, but if you make it back into the ring you will be starting again
from the opening scene with the silhouette.

Once King Dedede is down you will see a cut scene with all the characters from
the game stampeding past Kirby. A warp star will appear to take Kirby back to
the Warp Screen. Any letters you have collected towards E-X-T-R-A will still
be in place, but you won't be able to add any more just yet. Instead all three
warp stars are in place waiting to take you to the Pinball Land of your choice.

I suppose this is so you can continue to amass points if you're chasing a high
score. The last time I defeated Dedede I had 850,000 pts, but I've had a lot
more than that previously without defeating him.
