Ok I gone to veridian city but what happens? The gym is locked so what do I do?

This is the last gym go through viridain forest catch a caterpie raise into butterfree lv. 15. And take on brock

The Gym in Viridian is actually the 8th gym i.e. The last gym. So basically you could head out West first to battle Gary or ignore that and head North to get through Viridian Forrest and into Pewter City and continue the game.

That means you havent defeated him yet. Defeat the sliph scope boss Giovanni in his office second time and the gym will be automatically unlocked.

That is actually the last gym. YOu want to keep heading up through the forest to battle brock in pewtwer city.
