Attack points determine the damage of physical attacks (i.e. Normal-types, ground-types, fighting-types, rock-types). The higher the Attack power, the more damage physical attacks cause. Special Attack points determine the damage of non-physical attacks (i.e. Dark-types, fire-types, water-types, psychic-types, to name a few). The higher the Special Attack power, the more damage non-physical attacks cause, and so on. And just to add in, Special Defense is the defense-rate against non-physical attacks. The higher the Special Defense, the less you are affected by non-physical moves.

The difference between Attack and Sp. Attack is that the Attack powers up the Physical moves, those moves are the types that are Normal, Flying, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Bug, Ghost, Rock, and Steel. The Special Attack pwers up the Special moves, those that have the types Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, Ice, Dragon, Psychic, and Dark.

And that's the truth.

Physical attacks are solid and impact based attacks. Water and fire are not physical because they are composed of matter other than solid matter. Fire is composed of plasma, while water is composed of isloated liquidation molecules. I don't understand some of the special attacks in here, though... Ghost? Ghosts are composed of ectoplasmic energies that are seemingly more energy-based than plasma, and yet it's classified as physcial... You see, Pokemon isn't exactly completely realistic...

I forgot to add...

Attack based attacks are physical and damage the foe based on the foe's Physcial Defense and the power the of the attack being used. If the foe's Defense is high, then physcial attacks won't do as much damage.

The same applies with S. Attack and S. Defense.
