Definitely one of the best games I have ever played. Square really outdid themselves when they made this game. I had grown up on this game (originally Final Fantasy III on the SNES) and actually learned how to read because of it. Some people don't realize how big of an achievement this game was. When this game came out in 1992 (1991,1990, somewhere around there), what other games came out at that time? Donkey Kong Country? Super Mario World? Remember those games when you play this, then you can judge this game.
Graphics is the only place where this game lags a bit. Even with the limitations they had, though, they made the best of it. I noticed that they didn't make many changes in graphics since the SNES days. With the smaller Gameboy screen, though, the graphics don't look as choppy as on a larger TV screen.
The sound effects could use a little bit of work. However, the music makes up for this. From Kefka's crazy laugh to the sound when you cast flare, you'll recognize these sounds whenever you hear them (ESPECIALLY Kefka's annoying laugh). The music is really good. From Gau's warm theme to Shadow's sharp, cold-hearted theme, each character's theme vividly expresses their personality.
The gameplay is a big step up from the game before. The magic system is definitely an improvement. It's definitely better than the Materia or Draw systems. Once a character learns something, they keep it permanently. There's no "Job System" you have to worry about either. The only thing you have to worry about is deciding "Who is going to learn this magic first?"
As I've said before, I grew up on this game. I was literally in kindergarten when I started to play it. This is one of those games that you never get rid of. It is at least 30+ hours of gameplay, and in this game there isn't such thing as a loading screen. The only way you get through it that fast is if you just skip all of the sidequests, reading, and other things that make an RPG what it is.
If you just play games that have great graphics and judge based on them, then you are passing up the greatest RPG of all time. Each character has their own well-developed personality and background (except Gogo, I still don't know much about him/her/whatever) and unless you don't pay attention or don't really care you will easily be drawn into the story emotionally the same way a good book would. Overall it is a game I would highly recommend.
