Introduction

Final Fantasy 1 has a pretty straightforward story. There are 4 fiends based on the four elements that are guarding 4 crystals which is causing the world to enter a state of darkness. You control the four warriors of light and you get to pick what classes they are. This is basically the entire story, and although it might not sound enthralling, it was one of the first RPG's and for the time it was actually quite unique.

Graphics

The visuals are updated a lot from their originals and many people have even said that they did not recognize it because they were so used to the originals. The graphics were changed so that instead of 2 seperate sections, 1 for the enemies and one for the heroes, it is now all shown on 1 section with beautiful foreground and background images.

Sound

The music is interesting at first but after a while gets to be a little repetitive. The sound quality of this game has gone up a lot since the times of the original, and although the sound is of a better quality, it is relatively similar to the originals.

Gameplay

The gameplay is set up like most traditional RPG's of the time. Your characters are brought into random battles where they are located on the right side of the screen, and the enemies are located on the left. Each character is then selected and a menu pops up where you can choose to use a physical attack, magic, an item, or run away. This is the core gameplay aspect. After each battle you are awarded experience which is used to level up and gil which is the form of currency. Truly excellent gameplay that gets repetitive only after spending many hours with the game.

Lastability

The replay value of this game is almost limitless for several reasons. The first and less important reason is that the game does not take an extremely long time to play through as modern RPG's do. The first playthrough may take 18 hours while ones after that may be as little as 13 because you know locations of items better. The 2nd, extremely important reason is that you can get a totally unique playthough using the different classes. Playing through the game with all black mages for instance presents a totally unique challenge than playing with a more balanced team of a thief a knight a white mage and a red mage. While this may seem subtle, it truly makes for a unique play experience every time.

Overall

Overall, this game offers an excellent gaming experience that is reminiscent of years passed. The core gameplay and many story aspects are cliche by todays standards, but this is the game that started it all and I highly reccomend it not only for it's excellent gameplay, but for it's updated sound, visuals and several other little things added in as well. There is also one other thing changed between this version and the original. This is an extra storyline where you can fight bosses from later games in the series in randomly generated dungeons. However, this is optional and does not add very much to the game.

Final Score: 88%
