How do you protect against the stare of the abyss? What hero is NOT affected by this?

The stare of the Abyss is very cheap. There are no Heroes immune to this but there is a way to fight against it.Panacea Injection gets rid of the Stare of Abyss effect. Also, if you have Digital Decoy(Device) or Hologram Generators(Items) the Stare of the Abyss will not be able to hit. If it can not hit the effect can not kill your Heroes. If you have a Hero like Kitty Pryde, or Nightcrawler who can evade attacks by means of their own effects they get around too. Last word of advice, this can also be evaded by Heroes with high evasion stat. Personally I prefer the Digital Decoy device.

That's a terrible answer. The best thing about stare of the abyss is that you DON'T need to use the Panacea Injection to remove it. You can you virtually any of the super cheap low-level debuff-removers like smelling salts, thawing formula, hemostatic spray, antitoxin, etc. Stare of the Abyss sucks but any cheap de-buff de-stroyer will cure it right up.

Drink some antitoxins before fighting them--pray that one of your team is granted the first turn before any Mindless One. This will protect the whole team for at least one full round.

Thing and thor don't seem to get affected by it

Colossus seems to be resistant to it as well? Any ideas why?

As the game description writes it can be cured by anything that cures poison, burning, chilled and bleeding, after reading the above, *my best guess* is that anything that prevents the above automatically makes your hero immune to stare of the abyss. Reasons being:

1. The common thing about Thing, Thor and Colossus are: they are all immune to at least one of the above debuff - Thing (Bleeding, Burning, Chilled), Thor (Poison, Chilled, Burning) and Colossus (Bleeding, Burning, Chilled).

2. After application of detoxifier or anything that removes stare of the abyss (but at the same time gives you debuff immunity, hence panacea injection and norton shield doesn't count), the whole team is immune to stare of the abyss as long the immunity is in place.

3. Besides those heroes mentioned above, I've experimented with Valkyrie and Ghost Rider. Valkyrie has the same immunity as Thor, while Ghost Rider is immune to burning. They are not affected as well.

PS: I have not been hit by Abyssal Stare while using Colossus Fist (Giving you immunity like Colossus), so cannot confirm if it prevents you from stare of the abyss. If my hypothesis is right, it should.

You can use Thor, he is not affected by it.
