Introduction

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia is the latest Castlevania for handhelds. The story is still the same: defeat the evil Lord Dracula. However, things are different now. The entire Belmont Clan has mysteriously disappeared, along with the almighty whip, the Vampire Killer. Because of this, new groups have been surfacing to try to find new ways to defeat Dracula. One of these groups is Ecclesia. The main character, Shanoa, is part of Ecclesia. Ecclesia uses glyphs for weapons. Ecclesia has been entrusted with the corpse of Dracula. With it, the group has made a power known as Dominus, powerful enough to defeat Dracula. Shanoa, being a lead glyph user, has been chosen to wield Dominus. Albus, another member of Ecclesia, is angry at this. As Shanoa is absorbing Dominus, Albus intervenes, disrupting the process. He steals Dominus and runs away, while Shanoa is left without her memory or any emotions. Now, Shanoa (you) must track down Albus, and retrieve Dominus. However, things are not as they might seem...

Graphics

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia stays true to the side-scrolling Castlevania looks. Therefore, graphics are about the same as previous handheld Castlevania titles. However, this may be best for the game, since a complete focus on graphics would cause other areas to suffer, and it's not like the graphics are 16-bit. The visual effects of weapons and other various attacks are quite enhanced however. Though there is little change from the other DS Castlevania titles, the graphics are still commendable, earning it a score of 8 out of 10.

Sound

Music is a huge part in any game. Castlevania games have been known to have ominous or creepy background music, to enhance the effect of certain areas. Order of Ecclesia is no different. The music is eloquent, yet mysterious, and certainly gives players a true feel for the mood of the scenery. This creates a higher plane of involvement and reality, allowing for a more enjoyable experience. Therefore, the sound/music of this game receives a 9 out of 10.

Gameplay

Unlike previous Castlevania games, the character does not equip weapons. Instead, they have been replaced by glyphs. These can create weapons, such as rapiers and axes, that the player uses. There are three levels of strength in the basic weapons, as well as a few other magical glyphs. There are also glyphs that provide abilities or enhancements, like fast moving or flying. Two weapon glyphs may be equipped at a time, so a player can be ready for various situations or just dual-wield. Glyphs are acquired after defeating certain enemies or bosses, as well as in certain rooms. The player may also use both glyphs at the same time, creating a brand new attack. This takes up hearts (not MP). MP is what allows Shanoa to use glyphs; therefore, you cannot spam attacks infinitely. However, MP recovers fast. With this unique glyph system, gameplay receives a 9 out of 10.

Lastability

The game does not last extensively, but it still is long enough to be worth buying. There are a bunch of areas you can explore, including Dracula's Castle, the last area, which is almost half the game itself. Players may find it difficult to locate the missing villagers (an essential step to take) so the game could last longer for some than others. The game's lastability earns an 8 out of 10 but it truly varies from player to player.

Overall

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia is a very decent game. Its unique system of glyphs as well as the disappearance of the Belmonts provides for a new experience, even for Castlevania veterans. This game has no game preceding it directly, so anyone can pick it up and play. Overall, it receives an 8 out of 10.

Final Score: 84%
