#5) Oak

We know what you're thinking... But it's true... Professor Oak was once the Champion of the Kanto Pokemon League. And if you actually think about it, it makes a lot of sense. Oak mentioned in the Anime Series and also in the Manga Series that he used to be a great trainer and battled alongside Agatha, one of the early Elite Four Members. There were even a handful of hints about it in the Celebi Pokemon Movie, where you find out Oak was a trainer and had chosen a Charmander as his Starter Pokemon. After traveling back in time to his time, Professor Oak went on to be one of the best trainers in Kanto. He eventually went on to win the First Triennial Indigo League (which only exists in the Pokemon Manga Series) and become champion. After some time, Sam Oak went on to become the Professor we all know and love. His grandson, Gary/Blue, also eventually took the same career path as his grandfather.

Oak, in these rankings, rank slightly above Red. It mainly is due because we never got to see what Oak was made of as a Champion, and Red, even though he has the cool factor, and his storyline abruptly ended. If Red played more of a role in Gold/Silver and the remakes HeartGold/SoulSilver instead of just saying nothing, he would have definitely be ranked higher.

And even though we don't know much about Oak, we do have a bit of information to work with. There was a Glitch back in the First Generation Pokemon Games where you can battle Professor Oak. His team is a lot like Blue's Champion Team, but this only shows that the creators chose to instead give this team to Blue and forget about Professor Oak challenging the main character. We can presume Professor Oak's Pokemon Team was lead by his Charizard, with Gyarados, Tauros, Arcanine, and Exeggcutor in his arsenal. All of his Pokemon are at around Level 70, which puts him right in place with all the other Pokemon Champions.
