Top 10 RPGs for Genre Newcomers
6. Costume Quest
Costume Quest is kind of an odd cracker… as to be expected from Tim Schafer, creator of such quirky and cult games as Psychonauts and Grim Fandango. You play as a child on Halloween Night, and your brother (or sister) gets kidnapped by some candy grubbing monsters after mistaking them for a piece of candy corn. That means you and your friends have to go on a mission to stop the monsters from taking all the candy and saving Halloween… oh, and I suppose it'd be a good idea to save your sibling, too.
This title is a humorous and cute adventure, and perfect for gamers that are a bit off put by many RPGs' convoluted and bloated storylines. Costume Quest is also a relatively short game, with the typical playthrough lasting only around 10 or so hours.
During that time, you'll knock on doors to get candy (or get attacked), collect different costumes with different on field and battle abilities to round out your repertoire, and spend your precious sweets to get various other goodies. For such a short playtime, there is a good amount of content for players to enjoy.
Battles are a turn based affair, but instead of just choosing your action and watching it happen, you are able to make your attacks more powerful by performing on-screen queues, much like active quick time events. It lets the player stay in the action, and not feel bored by simply watching the action go by.
