Top 5 Game Heroes We Want to See Lose

In the majority of cases, the most basic of appeals in video games comes from a simple duality between the perceived "good" end against its "evil" counterpart. Players are portrayed in the protagonist role, rivaling a hindrance in need of toppling. Even in cases where the lines of morality are blurred, the player role is still that of the defining factor. Story moves from the player's perspective. It's not the world around us shaping circumstances as we helplessly waddle through it. It's that dynamic, putting ourselves in the powerful position, which makes our actions feel righteous; as if they're supposed to occur as we're dictating it.

However, not all character roles are equally suited to make a player feel satisfied with their choices. Some heroes can feel like the oppressing force themselves or feel like they're not the proper choice to follow. Some aren't just cut from the right stuff, but they're chosen to ultimately succeed anyway.

It would be nice to see those ill-fated characters fall, at least once. Even if we're forced to play with them, comeuppance would be more entertaining than an undeserved victory.

Here are the top 5 game heroes we would want to see lose:

5. Mario – The Bore

Welcome to the obvious and most inevitable choice. As a character that has spent the last thirty or so years winning everything on an endless stream of games, Mario is becoming a redundant character. Hell, the Mario name is even plastered on all but a few of these games, so the plumber is probably going to be successful from the get go. It's tired and predictable by now, Nintendo.

Making matters worse, the walking mustache is a template for mediocrity. In many party games, Mario is the simplest of standard, completely average in any way. Whether it's racing, tennis or even fighting, it doesn't get more generic than the never-ending median of statistics bound to this character. Who wants to be average all the time?

For once, it'd be great to see Mario's fall from grace. Start with a game where the happy-go-lucky icon struts their smarminess across the Mushroom Kingdom, to ultimately get blindsided and lose all but the most vital capabilities. Build whatever Pyrrhic victory comes from there, even if it's just consistent survival in a new realm. That'd be an achievement worth being proud of, instead the same routine. Mario would probably be the most thrilled with any change.
