Top 10 Best Video Game Franchises

6) Castlevania

Castlevania is another old franchise still alive and kicking today. The first game was released in 1986 for the NES. There are dozens of Castlevania games available across a variety of platforms, including some pretty good handheld titles. Older Castlevania games and handheld titles utilize 2D side-scrolling gameplay while most of the new console games such as Lords of Shadow are 3D.

Many consider Symphony of the Night for the PlayStation 1 to be the crown jewel of the series. SoTN was a very in-depth game that incorporated a lot of RPG elements such as leveling up based on experience, stats like hit points and damage, and acquiring new equipment to upgrade it throughout the game. It also had a Metroid-like map layout.

Good Castlevania games are still being made. Lords of Shadow for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC received review scores in the 80's. Dracula has always been the main bad guy in Castlevania while the protagonist is usually someone from the Belmont clan of vampire hunters.
