06. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002 Rockstar North)

Vote: 4/4

While there have been a lot of games in the GTA series before - and after - GTA: Vice City, none of them including GTA IV and V managed to capture and encapsulate what it meant to play the role of the protagonist in a GTA story as well as Vice City did.

The structure, the challenges, and the experience of being the focus were augmented by a vivid scenery, compelling story and plot that was at once familiar and yet unknown, and all the while leading the player on a rail that they could not see to its storming conclusion.

If its position as the King among the many in the series is in doubt, considering how often it was re-released, how strong it showed in every region it was sold in, and more to the point, the fact that it has been re-imagined as an iOS game should start to give an idea of just how important it was both as a game and to the series and its fans.

GTA: Vice City is the reason most of us still own a PS2...
