Switch to the shotgun when the game is starting up but befores the game screen appears. There will be a gun-changing confirmation sound but when the screen loads you will be armed with the pistol. If you play the game and don't change the pistol it will deal the same damage as if it were a shotgun and you will get more points because it is a pistol.
