|I picked the wrong family member to make a new generation and I don't want to make him a family so I was thinking of skipping ahead until he dies. But then it occurred to me that it might give me game over. So does it? Or do I just go back to choose a previous family member?

If your family members die without having kids, then you will get to pick your own person. It will give you lists of people to choose from.
My person got remarried but she was the one I picked in the new generation
Don't marry them to anyone! If you do whoever dies first will just get remarried again and again. Leave them alone and they can either die of old age or you can kill them.
