You need to fulfil your SIM's life dreams. When they are ready to die and their life dream percentage is 100% , the grim reaper will take them and an orb will be dropped. To upgrade the orb, give it to someone else and have them fulfil their dreams and they will drop a silver orb. If they fail to upgrade, it will be dropped as the previous type so you can try again. You can upgrade the silver to gold and the gold to platinum.
