Hi I know some tips
1.find the pony in the box {mostly in the shaded places}you know that kooky looking pony
2.play the mine cart mini game
3.level up, you mostly get one but some times you can get 2

ps. You don't always get a gem from the pony in the box, and sometimes she is not in a box
Some other ways are to get rid of those annoying parasites ( ponyville) changelings (Canterlot) and vampire bats (sweet Apple acres). Sadly, this method does not promise a gem.
When I put my tablet on airplane mode my game glitches I guess. Because I can play the bloonpop game in every town. I find Derpy pony either in the box or just standing there. I get parasprites every time I leave Ponyville but in canter lot and sweet apple it's a hit and miss. Also when in airplane mode totem making is a pain! You have to leave the game open or it won't make the totem. It will freeze on the time I was last in the ever free forest until I come back and spend gems or wait.
But any who, I got off track. While in airplane mode you have a higher chance of collecting gems much, much faster than playing with internet.

How ever. With airplane mode on you can't go to zecora's hut and make totems without having the game open and running for the timer to decrese for the totem. Other than that you get balloon pop game every time you go to the next town.
