Why do I lose all of my rank (battle) points after losing 1 battle?

I am 3rd rank (corporal I believe) which starts at 3,150 rank points. I usually will win about 10 battles consecutively and gain a lot of rank points (around 5 or 6,000) and then lose to 1 PERSON, 1 TIME, and lose all of the rank points I worked so hard for (back down to 3,150). Does it do this for everyone? Because this doesn't seem logical or fair.
