Tune them up, by adjusting first the FD and gear 1 & 2 ratios. You want to max these out for top speed (test, test & test) without tire spin effects. You will see the tire spin icon when you car is poorly tuned. These are bad. You want to tune your ratios just under the setting that cause the tires to spin
Depending on the level you're on, good tuning can save you multiple seconds. On my aero, level 9, I was able to tune the car down from 9.500 sec to 7.758 sec on 1/4 mile. Others do better than this.
You can also look on the web for tunes, there are a ton on youtube, I've used them to understand how to tune, but I get no kick of racing a car I didn't tune myself. It's so much more fun to tune a car and race against others.
