A Plague Tale: Requiem is an action-adventure survival horror stealth game that is the sequel to A Plague Tale: Innocence. The story follows siblings Amicia and Hugo de Rune who must look for a cure to Hugo's blood disease in Southern France while fleeing from soldiers of the Inquisition and hordes of rats that are spreading the black plague. Hugo is frequently overwhelmed by his newfound powers, while Amicia must face the emotional trauma of killing enemies and other actions done to protect herself and her brother.

Below is a collection of hints and tips that will help you to progress in the game. These include why you should not kill the guards with knives and why you should save your Crossbow Bolts.

Don't Kill Guards with Knives

Although Amicia is able to kill guards in combat using a knife to stab them this is something you should only be done as a last resort in order to escape. The reason is that throughout the game Amicia will find locked workbenches that will have an assortment of resources, tools, and parts that enables her to upgrade her Sling, Crossbow, Alchemy, Gear, and Instruments and the only way the workbench can be opened is by being pried open with a knife.

Save your Crossbow Bolts

When you reach Chapter 5 Amicia will receive the Crossbow which is a powerful weapon against guards. Up until then Amicia was able to kill guards that were not wearing a helmet with a headshot from her Sling. Now that she has the crossbow she will be able to kill helmeted guards and fully armored enemies. As you only have a limited number of bolts it is recommended that you save them for these types of enemies, especially the fully armored soldiers you encounter as they will require Tar mixed with Ignifer and a few bolts before going down.

Unable to Use Amicia's Abilities and Weapons

You will notice that there are certain times during the game when you are unable to use Amicia's weapons and abilities (this also includes her ability to sprint). When this occurs it indicates that you have entered a safe area of the game and can relax without fear of being attacked. The opposite happens whenever Amicia has full access to her tools and supplies and is able to run fast. When this happens it means there are either rats or guards nearby, or breakable objects which if you break will help you to advance.

Don't Waste Knives and Pots

Knives and Pots are pretty scarce in A Plague Tale: Requiem so make sure you are sparing with them as they are both one-use-items that can not be retrieved. Although the knives can be used to kill guards they are better used to pry open workbenches, so you gain access to the supplies like Pieces, Tools, and alchemy ingredients they contain. Pots can be particulary useful as projectiles when they are filled with ammunition like Ignifer or Extinguis. Keep in mind though that when you encounter a boss fight Pots usually respawn, so you will have an opportunity then to stock up on them.

Use Stealth to Pass Guards

A Plague Tale: Requiem is a stealth driven game where you spend a lot of time sneaking past guards or dispatching them when you have no other option. This means you need to stay out of sight by using whatever cover is available in your surroundings to stay hidden. If you need to throw a stone or pot to distract a guard, so they look the other way you need to make sure you choose the hand on the weapon wheel to throw the projectile because if you use the sling you will be heard and seen.
