This is my second guide for a game in the series (Devil Survivor 2) though I am pretty familiar with the series as a whole. I've been writing guides for games for quite some time now and specialize in RPGs. Like all of my guides, I strive to bring you, the reader, all possible outcomes in a concise yet effective manner so you get the most out of it. This guide will cover the game 100% to include Downloadable Content (DLC), Challenge Quests, Items, and a Demon Compendium to help you build the strongest team. Shin Megami Tensei IV Every year in the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado, all children who have turned 18 that year make a pilgrimage to Mikado Castle to take part in what is known as the "Gauntlet Rite," a traditional ceremony to determine a person's worthiness to join the elite ranks of the Samurai, noble warriors and protectors of the realm. You and your friend Issachar are from a simple village, and today is the day that your life may change forever... || | Basics [0200] | |______________________________________________________________________________| Combat In this game you'll be using what is called the Press Turn combat style. That means that you are assigned one Turn per party member and a standard action will use one Turn. Exploiting an enemies weakness and striking it will only use half of a Turn, so this becomes necessary to defeating tougher foes. You have the option to pass your turn by using the Next command, this also uses only half of a turn. If you miss an attack you'l be charged a turn in addition to the one you just used, so it's also essential to make sure you strike your target and not hit it's resistance. Smirk Sometimes when exploiting an enemies weakness a member will Smirk. This is a powerful trait that provides the following benefits: - Normal attacks have a 95% chance of being a critical hit. - Gun attacks have a 70% chance of being a critical hit. - Attack power increases. Effect is equivalent to three uses of Tarukaja. However, it will not stack with Tarukaja. - Normal attacks, Gun attacks, and attack skills all have a 100% hit rate. Does not apply to Hama, Muda, or ailment spells. - Even if an enemy hits your weak point, it will be treated as a normal hit and not a weak point hit. - Cannot receive critical hits. - 85% chance to avoid all attacks. However, chance of succumbing to ailments does not change. - If you have a full, four member party, getting all four to Smirk will heal everybody for 50% of their maximum HP and MP. Fusion Fusing demons is essential to progressing in the game. You can carry over skills when you fuse and this allows you to cover a new demons weakness to make it sturdier. You also have the added benefit of carrying over a damaging spell that the demon wouldn't normally have and thus make it able to exploit almost any enemies weakness, thus using only half a turn and benefitting your fight. Some fusions are considered special and require three demons to fuse a unique demon with usually unique skills and stats. Fusing these demons opens up the possibility of having "normal" demons with unique and powerful skills. Alignment Your choices matter, simply put. Almost every interaction you have with a choice effects your alignment towards Law or Chaos. What does this mean to you though? This game, like all Megami Tensei games, has multiple endings based on the path you take to the end of the game. There is a time in the game in which the party splits up and sides with either Law or Chaos. You also have the option of remaining Neutral and opposing both sides. Alignment goes from -100 to 100. You are considered Lawful if you are +9 or higher on the scale. You are considered Chaotic if you are -9 or lower on the scale. Anything between -8 to 8 is considered Neutral. Some choices are minor and result in a +1 or -1, while others are more meaningful and can effect your alignment by 5 or even 10 for drastic scenarios. You can keep track of your alignment throughout the game by going to any Hunter's Association and speaking to a Cynical Man. The alignment adjustment for your choices and actions are also noted throughout the guide so you can get a very precise total. Demon Whisper When a Demon reaches it's final skill it will Whisper to you it's powers. You can learn any skill pending it's not passive (that means you can't have Null: Physical or any skill like that). You can also stack skills to gain bonuses: Support Skills Physical/Gun Skills 1: MP Consumption -1 1: Damage +7 2: MP Consumption -1 2: MP Consumption -1 3: MP Consumption -1 3: Damage +7 4: Damage +7 Debilitate Skills 5: MP Consumption -1 6: Damage +7 1: MP Consumption -1 7: Damage +7 2: MP Consumption -1 8: Damage +7 3: MP Consumption -1 4: MP Consumption -1 Healing Skills 5: MP Consumption -1 1: Recovery +5 Drain Skills 2: MP Consumption -1 3: Recovery +5 1: Damage +1 4: Recovery +5 2: MP Consumption -1 5: Recovery +5 3: Damage +3 6: Recovery +5 4: Damage +5 7: Recovery +5 5: Damage +5 8: Recovery +5 Magic Skills Status Inflicting Skills 1: Damage +1 1: Probability +5 2: MP Consumption -1 2: MP Consumption -1 3: Damage +3 3: Probability +5 4: Damage +5 4: Probability +5 5: MP Consumption -1 5: MP Consumption -1 6: Damage +5 7: Damage +5 8: Damage +5 || | Characters [0300] | |______________________________________________________________________________| The Protagonist The player character. After turning 18, he made his way to Mikado Castle to take part in that year's Gauntlet Rite, and became one of only five chosen to become new Samurai. His actions will have grave repercussions, but his choices are up to you... Walter An ill-mannered young man who speaks bluntly. Despite his off-putting behavior, he does have a caring heart and believes in doing what is best. Jonathan A gentle young man with a good upbringing. While the differences in personalities may sometimes cause the other new Samurai recruits to become at odds with each other, Jonathan is a natural mediator and tries to bring everyone to a common purpose. Isabeau The sole female of this year's crop of recruits, she is strong-willed yet dignified. However, there is a side of her that the others may never discover. Navarre A Luxoror selected as on of the new Samurai. An elitist and a sore loser, he openly shows hostility toward the protagonist and Walter who are Casualry- born. His road to becoming a full-fledged Samurai will be a jarring one. Hope The leader of the Samurai. He trains the prentice Samurai. While strict when it comes to missions, he is not a man to be tied down by rules. He cares for his troops and puts the well-being of the people as his top priority. Issachar While he and the protagonist are the same age, Issachar has always acted as something of an older brother. They grew up together, and Issachar has always dreamed of becoming a Samurai himself one day. Tayama The leader of the organization known as the Ashura-kai, he is well known throughout Tokyo. The people both fear and idolize him. Tayama was the one who successfully negotiated with the demons to bring order to the chaotic city. However, nobody is certain exactly what kind of deal he brokered to protect the human population... Kaga A strong and confident woman and a member of the Ring of Gaea. She does not agree with Tayama and the Ashura-kai's stance, and continues to oppose their ideas as a member of the Ring of Gaea. It is said that the Ring of Gaea has many fighters as skilled as Kaga among their numbers. The Black Samurai This mysterious character appears before the protagonist and his comraders more than once. She speaks in a cryptic manner, as if she is trying to lead them to answers while simultaneously seducing them down a dark path. When they encounter her in the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado, she seems to have knowledge of both the kingdom and Tokyo.... || | Walkthrough [0400] | |______________________________________________________________________________| Dreams of a Future During the opening scenes of the game you'll get a chance to name your Protagonist, by default his name is Flynn. When you gain control of Flynn just run forward to the shining figure in the distance. While you can explore the burning city a little bit, there's really nothing to do. After you meet Walter you're taken to another area where you will meet Jonathan. The Gauntlet Rite Flynn wakes up and heads to the castle town with Issachar. You can head to the many different districts and talk to the people in town but they all point to the Aquila Statue at Mikado Castle as the site for the Gauntlet Rite. The monk will say, "Present to me your left arm." [ ] Extend your arm. (Alignment +1) [ ] Don't extend your arm. (Alignment -1) It should come as no surprise, the Gauntlet chooses Flynn to be a Samurai. Engage the bottom screen and enjoy the story as it progresses to the next morning. When you wake in the morning you meet Walter, again: "By the by... have we met somewhere before?" [ ] Possibly... (Alignment -1) [ ] I don't believe so. (Alignment +1) There's a bunch of places you can go if you want to chit-chat but head to Naraku Entrance and meet the rest of the new Samurai. One of them approaches you kindly: "My name is Isabeau. What's yours?" [ ] Introduce yourself (Alignment +1) [ ] Remain silent (Alignment -1) You receive [300 MACCA] and [HEALING WATER x5] from Hope and are sent on your way. Visit the shops if you want, just know that you can't buy much. Head to the Naraku Entrance to start your training. || | Training Exercise I [0401] | |______________________________________________________________________________| ||| | Difficulty: 1 | This is the first training exercise. Head through the door and you'll fight your first battle. Take out the Slime and the Lham Dearg to learn the basics of combat and complete the first quest. It leads right into the next one without taking you anywhere. Exploration If you want to explore real quick then you can find a door to the east where Isabeau is located. The Samurai inside can give you some tips if you need. The west is a locked door -- you can't open it now but sooner than later. There are also plenty of signs around in case you haven't noticed. They provide valuable information, so the sign says. || | Training Exercise II [0402] | |______________________________________________________________________________| ||| | Difficulty: 1 | This is the second training exercise. Use the charts at the beginning of each section | | to optimize your attacks so you can get extra turns and avoid giving the | | enemy a chance to attack. For example, fighting with a Fuxi in this area is | | a bad idea because two Demons resist it's Zan attack and another Nulls it | | completely. That's not to say you shouldn't recruit one of these Demons, | | just that using it for it's Force attacks isn't too bright. On the other | | hand, Lham Dearg is effective since two enemies are weak to Gun. | \\____________________________________________________________________________// Recruiting Demons One of the mainstays of the game, recruiting Demons can be both enjoyable and painstaking depending on how keen you are. Burroughs will give you a briefing on recruiting, but all you need to do is talk to a Demon while in combat. The Demon will then ask you questions and negotiate, all you need to do is provide the correct responses. Typically you can tell what the Demon seeks and then all you need to do is answer accordingly. As an example, Lham Dearg seeks to see strength and loyalty so when he asks for some life force let him take some, but if he threatens to harm you then disagree and challenge him. In another example, Mokoi is an intellectual and moral Demon so answering truthfully and intelligently will gain his trust, he also isn't often "Cheated" when asking for an item so it's best to comply. - Answer according to the Demon's personality. - Don't try to cheat an intelligent demon, it won't succeed often. - If there are multiple demons to fight, defeat one first then negotiate with the other. This allows you to fail and not get slaughtered. ______________________________________________________________________________ //\\ | When trying to recruit early in the game it's best to save often. Usually | | failing to recruit a Demon will result in dying until you can get your stock | | up to par. Don't be discouraged if you have to reload a few times. You'll | | quickly learn the personality of the Demons you are trying to collect and | | can progress afterwards. It's a steep learning curve, but you are in a state | | of training so keep that in mind. | \\____________________________________________________________________________// Stick to First Stratum While you have the opportunity to venture to the Second Stratum it's best to hang out on the first level and collect a large party. Your first encounter will be with a singular Centaur. So long as he doesn't ask for an arm and a leg you should be able to comply with giving up a few Macca to recruit him. Don't be overly brash with challenging him to a fight, but Cheat him if the chance arises because he takes the bait often. Further Exploration If you move into the corridor to the north you'll notice a door to your left. Inside you can find Walter and Navarre, and a Samurai with some information. Heading east you'll find your first Relic on the ground, a [2-STAR JEWELRY]. Continue north from here and a sign gives some instruction on how to look down. This is great advice considering the east wall has a hole you can crawl through right near the sign. This hidden section requires you to climb up to a dead end with some [DEEP GREEN MOSS]. The door in the northeast leads to Jonathan and two Samurai with more random tidbits. Save and Heal Often It may sound like common sense, but save after a successful recruitment. If you are low on health, don't burn all your healing items! Instead, return to the barracks for a quick heal. Once you reach level 3-5 you'll be a little bit stronger and having a Demon or two will make exploiting enemies easier. || | Final Training Exercise [0403] | |______________________________________________________________________________| ||| | Difficulty: 1 | This is the final training exercise. This will place you near a [DEEP GREEN MOSS] relic. Jump down from this area and head through the door to the south. Expect an ambush, so open the door and immediately swing for a chance to counter. You'll encounter a Chagrin in this floor and possibly a Myrmecolion, both of which are a little stronger than the enemies you've been facing. After opening the southern door you'll notice you're in a wide open area. Snag the [1-STAR JEWELRY] from the ground in this area then look east for a spot to crawl under the cave wall into a small passage. Acquire the [DEEP GREEN MOSS] and notice the strange object blocking your way. This is called Wormwood and can be slashed down if you desire. Head back to the previous room and move south, climbing up the eastern wall to spot an immobile enemy, glowing red. This is an indicator of a special demons, so save up and make sure you're healed. || | Special Demon - Disaster Horde | \____________________________________________________________________________/ || | Level: 6 Resist: Poison/Panic/Sleep/Bind/Sick | | HP: 280 Null: Lost | | MP: 127 Weak: Force/Light Drain: N/A | |==========================================================================| | If you got a Fuxi to Whisper over Zan or decided to level one you | | should be ok with getting a few extra turns during the fight. You'll get the run down on how Challenge Quests work and Navarre challenges the group to complete three the fastest. The three Challenge Quests that are available are: [0501] Gather Some Naraku Lichen [0502] Collect Demon Claws [0503] The Lion's Roar Within Naraku Preparing for Orthrus The first two Challenge Quests are fairly simple and it's possible you have the items needed to finish them already. The third quest requires you to fight a level 8 Orthrus. Having Fire Resistance and Bufu spells to cast will aid in your slaying of the Demon, so bring Demons with those qualities (Centaur/Pele). The Cathedral of Shadows The main focus of this series is the ability to fuse Demons and create newer and more powerful ones from this act. As you enter Naraku you'll get a message from Burroughs that this App is available now. Experiment with creating what you want, but if you want to make the next part of the game a little easier and pick up Agi and Posumundi then make a Pele. (Alignment +1) [ ] I don't know this man (Alignment -5) After the conversation you are free to return to Mikado Castle. This is good for you because you can heal after any battle for free and it's not a far trip at all. Move straight ahead and acquire the [1-STAR JEWELRY] then keep east to find an Innocent Horde. This group can be easily defeated with few magic spells like Zio or Bufu. Clear out the Wormwood and head to the event area to free some villagers. Move south and fight an Elemental Horde. This is different than the previous enemy as it resists pretty much everything but Gun and Physical attacks. Still, it shouldn't be much of a fight. Go southwest to the final horde, another Innocent Horde, and defeat them then enter the event area to free more of the Kiccigiorgi villagers. Move east to an event area to start a battle with Strix. This creature flies and that means it's weak to Gun attacks, they certainly make short work of it. You'll get contacted by Hope once you've cleared all the areas. Head back and heal then move south into the second half of the forest. Finding a Friend In this next area you'll be barred by Wormwood, so just destroy it and march onward. You'll come across a [2-STAR JEWELRY] relic as you make the turn. Not much further and you can jump off the ledge and open the treasure chest for some [HEALING WATER]. Double back around to this spot and continue on to find another treasure chest, this one with a [REVIVAL LEAF]. Immediately in front of you is K the White. Jump down to fight him. K the White uses Physical and Gun attacks like Blight and Riot Gun so throw up a Tetrakarn and watch him kill himself. Break the Wormwood and collect the [BEAD CHAIN]. Head north and turn west instead of taking the northern exit. This will put you back in Animal Trail D but right infront of another hole. Jump down to find Isabeau the White. She will alternate between Maragidyne and Titanomachia, so keep one up according to the pattern she uses. Once defeated, head around to the southeast exit. Move south through the Wormwood and continue on a southeast movement. This will take you to Animal Trail B and the final White. || | Boss Demon - Issachar the White | \____________________________________________________________________________/ || | Level: 67 Resist: Poison/Panic/Sleep/Bind/Sick | | HP: 8,686 Null: Lost/Dark/Light | | MP: ??? For winning the fight you don't seem to get much, but you unlock the ability to fuse Ares. || | Capture the Berserker [0506] | |______________________________________________________________________________| ||| | Difficulty: 3 | I am pursuin a demon that has been causing | | Client: Kishin Eriang Shen | mischief in the heavens. One will eventually ask if you want some information. Agree to it and Burroughs will make a quest for you. You have to go to the Fourth Stratum to find Wu Kong. While he might be a much higher level than you, he's actually not as tough as you might think. If you have beaten Minotaur then you can come to the Wu Kong fight with the same party; Wu Kong is weak to Ice but has Null: Physical. Find him on the bridge of the Fourth Stratum then chase him to the Second Stratum, where you fought the Horde earlier. After beating him (dealing about 25% of his max health) twice he'll rush to the gate on the Fifth Stratum. Finish him off for good here and you'll complete the quest. || | I Want a Classy Down Quilt [0507] | |______________________________________________________________________________| ||| | Difficulty: 1 | This is a job from B's pharmacy. He has about 850 HP so he can be a bit of a problem since you likely can't take him out in a single turn by just casting Zio over and over. Heal if you need to but focus on casting Zio repeatedly to win the battle. After the battle Long asks what you think dragons are, "Enemies to be slain for honor and glory? As gods of the land?" However, this is | | Task: Slay Calamity Horde | not a disease, but a curse, caused by the | | x5 | dancing of a group of Macabre spirits on the | | | third level of Naraku. Eliminate them. | |____________________________|_________________________________________________| Head down to the Third Stratum and check the entrance for the first Horde. The others are scattered and somewhat random but none are in the poisonous area. The last one is typically in the southwest corner where you have to crawl. To defeat them just use Gun skills or Ma- spells (like Mazio or Mazan) to deal damage numerous times. After you defeat the fifth Horde the violin-playing Demon David appears and he's none too happy. If you've fought Medusa or are gearing up for her, David is a good test. You'll have plenty of Electric magic so be sure to use it and boost your attack damage when you get a chance. You should be able to get David in two turns, but you have to live through his instant death spells first. || | A Drunkard's Best Friend [0510] | |______________________________________________________________________________| ||| | Difficulty: 1 | I'd like some liver from the Tangata Manu | | Client: K | demons. Asura casts Maragion a lot, it's pretty rough but if you have a demon with Null: Fire you can negate further attacks. The only attacks you want to use on Asura are Ice attacks, so break out that Bufula. Use Tetrakarn when you are done so you can reflect his damage-all Physical attack and get back to doing what you do best. || | Training Battle 3 [0536] | |______________________________________________________________________________| ||| | Difficulty: 2.5 | Here is this Training Battle's goal: Find a way | | Client: System Instructor | to damage the demon without having your attacks | | Reward: 2,000 Macca | reflected, and defeat it within three turns! | | Task: Complete the mission | | | given to you. | | |____________________________|_________________________________________________| 1. Organizer | to begin. All Hunters representing their | | Reward: Hunter Crown x1 | districts, meet at the Tokyo Dome in Suidobashi.| | Task: Win the tournament. | We'll have all the old favorites competing this | | | year, as well as one surprising rookie. It's | | | going to be crazy! | |____________________________|_________________________________________________| You must complete the Prelims first. Head to Kasumigaseki and go north above the river to the Tokyo Dome. Battle 1: Yurlungur (Level 33) Weak: Fire Prisoner Yokota (Level 40) Samyaza (Level 32) Weak: Force Tattooed Man (Level 31) Weak: Dark Start by killing the Yurlungur and Samyaza with targeted attacks based on their weakness. The Tattooed Man should be your next victim but you might not get around to him until your second round. As usual, leave Yokota till last and heal up as you pick on the single target. "The audience is holding its breath, waiting for [Hero]'s next move! What will he do next!?" [ ] Spare your foe (Alignment +1) [ ] Finish him (Alignment -1) Battle 2: Skogsra (Level 29) Weak: Fire Fusou Fujio (Level 40) Arachne (Level 40) Weak: Ice Incubus (Level 33) Weak: Electric Refrain from damage-all elemental spells, it will get you in trouble here. Instead, focus on downing the Arachne by using Bufudyne then work on the Incubus to alleviate that problem. Skogsra really poses no threat and the Human isn't that big of a deal unless he continually uses Blast Shot. "The entire audience is in suspense! What will the Hunter Samurai do next?" [ ] Spare your foe (Alignment +1) [ ] Finish him (Alignment -1) Battle 3: Mishaguji (Level 37) Weak: Ice Hiro Jingu (Level 40) Yomotsu Ikusa (Level 37) Weak: Light Hare of Inaba (Level 38) Weak: Gun/Fire Start with the Hare of Inaba and Mishaguji since you exploit their weakness the easiest. This gives you a 4 to 2 advantage and make dealing with the Yomotsu Ikusa a little simpler. Make sure you have resistance to Light attacks because Hiro Jingu will cast Mahamaon and kill your team pretty effortlessly if you can't negate the attack. "The entire audience is on tenterhooks as we await [Hero]'s next move. What will this unmatched Hunter do!?" [ ] Spare your foe (Alignment +1) [ ] Finish him (Alignment -1) Battle 4: Ose (Level 38) Weak: Bind G. H. Hills (Level 40) Titan (Level 37) Weak: Bind/Sleep/Poison Rakshasa (Level 38) Weak: Force/Light/Sick As you can see, there aren't many weak points in the final match. Exploit the status effects if you can, Bind is definitely useful. Start with killing the Rakshasa with Force attacks. Tetrakarn will go a long way in this fight with the Megaton Press and Blight attacks being thrown at you. Mr. Hills will use Purple Smoke so have Posumudi ready to cure the poison, or just neglect to cure if it Hills is the only one left since he'll go down easily enough. "Now then, what will [Hero] do!?" [ ] Spare your foe (Alignment +1) [ ] Finish him (Alignment -1) || | I Require Ample Weaponry [0547] | |______________________________________________________________________________| ||| | Difficulty: 5 | This is Hope. It's just you and Nozomi again, return to the Underground and enter the East Entrance to get started. At the southwest is your first Horde. It's Weak: Fire and as always, the multi-attacks work great on Hordes. Head due east for number two; Nozomi gets captured again. North from here you'll find a third Wicker Man Horde that captures Nozomi again. Just when you thought it was over, Cernunnos appears and he's not even slightly happy. He has Null: Electric, Resist: Physical, but Weak: Force and that's going to be your ticket to winning. Boost up your stats and drop a Makarakarn if you have it for your first turn. Obviously, throw in a Force attack where you need so you have the additional actions needed to buff properly. Attacks like Wind Breath and Zanma (or Zandyne if you have it) will definitely put a dent in Cernunnos and let you win the battle decisively. || | Training Battle 7 [0555] | |______________________________________________________________________________| ||| | Difficulty: 4.5 | This is the battle you have all been waiting | | Client: System Instructor | for.
